Hello from Japan

First of all, what a great website, and a wealth of information from homeowners, hobbyists, and professionals.

I am currently in the US Navy, stationed in Yokosuka, Japan. I am the boiler inspector for the shipyard over here, and I've spent about the last 10 years in Japan. In about a year and a half, I'll be hanging up my Navy uniform for good, and have become interested in the joys of hobby farming and home ownership.

My first objective is to get a job(of course). Hopefully, I can get the wife to sign off on a home outside the city limits with a bit of property (>5 acres), so I can have a nice sized workshop, and piddle around a bit with my bucket list. I have the bargaining chip of being able to relocate anywhere in the states, so that takes some of the pressure off of finding work when I retire from the Navy.

I'm chomping at the bit to get out of here and get started on chapter 2. I have three kids, aged 2, 4, and 8, so I'll be needing a real job for the foreseeable future

Anyways, that's about all there is to me. Again, I appreciate all the information on this site, and yes I will most definitely have some questions in the future that can't be resolved with the "search" function.

Somewhere your own fresh water well and not depending on some water authority.
No family on either side to relocate to within driving distance?
Somewhere where the neighbours are not anti hunting greenies.
Somewhere where the neighbours are not illiterate, uncooth , thieves, have a dog kennel or into drugs.
Culture shock will occur with a double whammy. Military to civilian life and Japan to US culture.
If you are into eddy current and ultra sound inspections. You could make some significant extra cash working a couple of months spring and fall during power plant outages.

While this set of maps bothers the liberals to no end. Scroll down to the "seven deadly sins" and check out the last one titled "Pride". I would look for an extat in the low crime, dark tan coloured areas. Makes me think about retiring in north central Texas.

I'm originally from Oklahoma, and my wife refuses to live there, so we have Texas in mind for sure.

I'm intrigued by some of the houses in Ohio though, because they come with "free gas" and if the user limits are high enough, I could install an energy cell and gas compressor and covert my cars (and tractor) to natural gas. I want enough acres to have a lifetime supply of free firewood as well. A lot of things have changed in the states since I joined almost 20 years ago.

My first few thousand invested will be for a panic room, DVR security cameras, and an alarm system. Then I can get started on my shop hobbies.

That's no way to live! Crikey!!! I'd up stakes and move down here to Tassie (if your wife would let you). My doors are still un-locked, I sleep peacefully at night and my neighbours are good & helpful.

Meth addicts are an unpredictable bunch. My good friends keep me updated on all the stuff that gets stolen from thier houses/barns while they are sleeping/at work. I will most likely be travelling as a huge part of my job. I will sleep better in my hotel room knowing my wife and kids at least have a fighting chance. Partially I'm just paranoid from all the negative media I see from over here.

You don't even know how much I would LOVE to live in Australia. Let me know how I can get a job down there. Wouldn't be too far for me and the family to move.
