I have a few implements that really should have slip clutches on them. i.e snowblower, bush hog and pto manure spreader. I was wondering if they make a portable slip clutch that I can just attach on the 6 point spline on the PTO side of the tractor and can easily move it from one tractor to the other. Was hoping for something with a push button female end on one side and then a 6 point spline on the other end.

Not sure, but, every warning I have seen on these included 'always attach clutch to implement side of PTO shaft and not to tractor as the spinning mass and springs pose a safety risk to the operator'.

Thanks for the response on and the link Midniteoyl. I read that whole previous thread and there are some valid points. I didn't think anybody made one and this confirms it. Was hoping somebody made one maybe the size or something similar to an overrunning clutch. I see those connected and left on tractors all the time.

Overrunning clutches are relatively small compared..

They do make 'quick connect' type clutches that you could use.. not as ideal and would require the use of a removable type PTO shaft as well.

Plus, each slip clutch should be adjusted to the break-away torque required to protect the implement/tractor combination upon which it's operating. Doubt you'd want to readjust this "portable" slip clutch every time you mounted a different PTO-driven implement.

Greg,

I'm confused, but that's nothing out of the ordinary.:)

The only implement that I own that is slip-clutch equipped is my rotary cutter. I follow the owner's manual in maintaining and adjusting the clutch. The manual says that the springs should be compressed to a given dimension (32.5mm in my case) for proper protection. Suppose that I wanted to switch that clutch to another implement, say a tiller. Assuming the splines matched, would a different spring compression be required? Another way of asking the question -- "Are slip clutches designed to be implement specific"?

Slip clutches are designed to be adjusted to a specific implement/tractor combination.

Some manufacturers approach it scientifically, giving you a spring length chart relative to available PTO horsepower. This approach is designed to protect the tractor, potentially at the expense of the implement. I say this, because it won't let the implement slip until the torque load approaches that of the tractor that's turning it. If the tractor already has a PTO rating equal to or higher than that of the implement transmission, you can understand why adjusting to the tractor can be at the expense of the implement. And if you move that implement to a tractor with a different horsepower rating, the clutch spring length hould again be adjusted accordingly.

Others are adjusted by the trial and error method. Here you loosen the springs upon first installation, then gradually and sequentially tightened until the clutch no longer slips under operational load. It is a less precise method, but generally serves to protect both tractor and implement. This method assumes that the implement transmission rating is higher than the tractor PTO rating.
