How big is your garden and how many tomato plants?

When your avatar says you live on the lake, you aren't kidding. All I can see is water. Must be pretty and you can fish off the porch?

My house sits back from the water a bit. My garden is right at the water and some plants are grown on a small pier. Here is a shot of summer garden.

I think it's possible to get some late tomatoes if you can keep them protected. It would be interesting to find out how they taste by comparison if they make.

We had temps in the high 20s over the last two nights, plus COLD northwest wind. I covered the little plants with some blue plastic. Here they were this morning in their covered home

As the sun came out today I uncovered them and so far so good:

lakngulf--around here folks do not use the blue tarps but rather old bed cotton bed sheets. I can't say from personal experience but it is said that the blue plastic offers little or no frost protection. Just thought I should mention this.

dave1949--I think it was you that lamented about growing hot peppers in the short growing season of Maine. You know I did it when I lived there and today I just got my Johnny's catalog. On page 87 there are all kinds of hot peppers with maturities as short as 60 days from transplant. Most are in the 80-something day range and I am certain you can grow these in the 90 day season of Maine and show those Texans the what for.

In getting ready for this year's garden, I ran across a tomato others might be interested in. I'm buying a packet of them. It's a new Burpee hybrid called "Steakhouse" and it's said to deliver 24 oz to 48 oz tomatoes with a 75 to 80 day maturity. That's a huge tomato no matter how you slice it. It's on the front page of the catalog but here is the on-line link. I've never seen a tomato this big.

Trouble is, it's $7 for 25 seeds and with shipping of $5 makes it a pricey proposition. Still, Burpee thinks enough of it to put it on the cover of their catalog so I'm going to buy a pack and think it as a wise choice. I'll post photos here in July.
