My office manager just called about one of our trucks that is at the dealer getting fixed from a wreck where another driver collided with it. The dealer told my office manager that the injectors need cleaning that "they are beyond filthy." He told her the fuel injector cleaning service was $400.00. If it needs it I don't have a problem with it but it only has 89,000 miles on it and $400.00 sounds steep to me for this service. I would like your opinions on this should I have it done at all or should I have it done at another shop or should I let the dealer that has it now do the service. Thanks in advance..

As long as the truck is running smoothly and isn't getting horrible fuel economy, skip it. That dealer's "injector cleaning" is overpriced by more than $300.

Pretty much what I thought. The truck is running as smooth as it ever has and is getting the same fuel mileage since new. Thanks for your input :)

If your Ford gasser is new enough, it means there is no factory fuel filter installed. Some people like that move, personally I don't. Not picking on Ford, other manuf. do the same now.

Esp. with these newer filter-less designs, it helps to use a quality concentrated cleaner in gas engines every now and then - it can help keep the injector orifice and filter screens clean.

Up here, I use TKO 2000 for Gas, Amsol PI and Seafoam. I've also heard good things about Techron, just haven't tried any yet.

Chevron 65740 Techron Concentrate Plus Fuel System Cleaner - 20 oz. : Amazon.com : Automotive

If there are no driveabilty issues, I'd just treat the fuel twice, at the recommended intervals. Some of these cleaners are concentrated enough that they shouldn't be used continously.

+1 They ALWAYS try to get more out of us and it usually does not happen ESP the injector cleaning BS. Do not let them do it. What I usually ask them is why did they tear my injector apart to determine that it needed cleaned? That ends the conversation. CJ

Just an update I checked with my dodge dealer on doing the same service. $160.00 instead of the $400.00 the ford dealer was asking. I haven't had time but I plan in checking the suggested maintenance intervals for this truck and see if it says anything about fuel injectors.

I'm curious how they determined they need cleaning? Perhaps Mis-fire codes? If so, perhaps it should be covered under the emissions warranty. This is typically much longer than general warranty. Worth asking unless this was just an attempt to sell you something your truck doesn't need.

It was my office manager that was picking up the truck so I'm just going from hearsay. Once I find out more I'll let you guys know.

I thought running a couple tanks of E85 was supposed to do a great job of injector cleaning. Your 6.2 is E85 compatible, correct?

I do not think it is e85 compatible. I'll have to check and make sure.

I got rooked into that on my last GMC 6.2 at around 20k...$160 to do it, I let them at a weak moment...Nothing in the manual about this being necessary. Noticed no difference in anything afterwards except my K&N sticker that stated "Does not void warranty" was suspiciously missing.:smiley_aafz:

Around these parts you have to seek out E85...Most pumps say "Up to 10% booze"..Thankfully that hasn't caused any harm to any of the gas motors I have---Yet.

My wifes SUV has almost 100K on it. Never had injectors cleaned or had any "snake oil additives" put in the fuel tank. It still runs like new and gets same old 16 MPG as when new.

As many of my ancestors were Scottish, I'm not known for throwing money away. So no, I wouldn't be paying a dealer to clean anything.

If you don't hang onto vehicles past about 6 years (average annual mileage), then any FI problems are going to belong to somebody else.... so it is a Don't Care for the original owner - fair enough.

If you hang onto vehicles a long time, the first thing to figure out is whether or not a newish vehicle even has a replaceable fuel filter. If so, check the OEM change interval, many people ignore this on road vehicles.

If your vehicle has no fuel filter, you might want to think about where the crud that used to end up in the filter is now sitting - unless you are selling it soon.

Above comments come from seeing injectors coming off gas motors at my friends shop, with clogged up screens on the top of the injector.

Lots of factors come into play, YMMV, literally. If you run a high quality/high detergent gasoline all the time, you are likely going to be in good shape. I choose to buy less costly fuel most of the time, and about 2 times/year (for my mileage) treat a tank with one of the products I listed before.

I can guarantee you two things with gas. There is no better fuel system cleaner than ethanol. Second is no snake oil is going to clean crud out of your system. It must be manually removed.

This comes from maintaining about 70 gas engines. Majority on boats that see low utilization. We just had to pump out 150 gallons of bad gas, manually clean the fuel tanks, install all new fuel hoses, pumps, filters, ect.

Yeah I had pretty much had my mind set on they're just trying to take my money and there is no need in this service. I just wanted to check and get the consensus on here as well. I don't see spending money on things that are not needed but I also want to make sure my guys are in dependable trucks before I send them out on the road.

Thanks to everyone for your opinions. I was really wanting to hear from peacock on this subject being I think he used to work for ford.
