Yes the drive shaft was hooked up. the reason I took it out was to try to find why the recently installed loader will not raise. I do not have a pressure gauge, so I decided to gut the pump and look for something broken or clogged or rusted stuck.. you know a defect inside the pump, I didn't find anything broken or plugged up or anything like that. Taking it apart and putting it back together was a little tricky, but it's back together and still acts the same as it did before I took it apart. I'm hoping someone here will have a similar experience and see something that I didn't see - I can take it apart again if I need to. There was hydraulic fluid in the pump, but I put the recommended sae30 oil in after I reassembled.

On my 18th Birthday my dad bought me a Buick Electra Park Avenue that was made the same year I was born. Turns out it also rolled off the assembly line the exact month and day I was born too. March 8th 1988.
That was cool to get a car on my birthday that was made when I was born.
To bad I had to junk the old car as the engine threw a rod and then the door seals leaked water onto the floorboard and rusted the floor through.
It was a sad day to see it get crushed it also got real good gas mileage.
Dad only gave $400.00 for it and I got a lot of use out of it. Well worth the money.
And then when I sold it for scrap I got $400.00 back out of it.
Not a bad deal.

Pump looks good by the pictures. Now comes the hard part is finding the system relief valve and any other components that could cause this failure.
Does your loader have single acting cylinders or double acting? I.e. power up only or power both directions?
Does the directional control valve have two connections or quick disconnects per spool or just one?
Potential problems are:
Relief stuck open allowing the pump flow to by pass to tank.
If double acting cylinders cylinder seals could be shot.
If single acting: Can't remember if the "M" had the option of switching their direction spools from single acting to double acting or not. On the front face of the directional valve is their a roll pin through the spool that is under a flat spring that would allow turning the spool to one of two different positions approx 60 degrees apart? If yes this feature could be turned to single acting and you may have your hoses plugged into the wrong quick disconnects.
my M provides one way pressure to dual 2-way valves (return to the filler cap). 1 valve is supposed to provide up / down pressure to the loader, the other valve is supposed to provide tilt up /down to the bucket.
I think the relief is one of the internal springs, which looked ok.
The cylinders aren't leaking, but I will need to investigate the possibility that they might be plugged.

As long as you have it apart, that cover shows that the gears have worn into it quite a bit. That increased headspace can drop your pressure quite a bit. I'd look up what the headspace is supposed to be - probably nothing more than .002 max. I redid mine on a H by putting it on a surface grinder, gave me a nice flat surface, and the pressure maxed out The relief valve is important also.
I would not run 30 weight in the hydraulics. IH folks like to use Hytran, or a equivelent.
