So here in Amerika we should execute any thief if a gun happens to be handy; whereas in some countries a hand is taken for a bread-loaf stolen?! Remind me who the barbarians are?:confused2:

The barbarians are those who claim to live by the rule of law but make exceptions when it suits their mood.

Oh sure.. make it the victims fault.. Whats next? Cant wear 'revealing' clothing? This is why I dont live in Washington...

You might check with your insurance on the subject of your actions abetting the theft...

As a matter of fact, I was distracted by my grandkids trying to run off tonight that when I tried to hit the 'engine stop' button, it wouldnt. A chime and warning on the screen told me the car was still in Drive and would NOT shut it off. It does indeed happen.

That might have been the cause of some of the "runaway acceleration" crashes. IMO that 'button' is one of the dumbest ideas going.

The truck was a manual with the shifter on the column. They believe it jumped into gear.

Jeep has a recall notice on our 2006 Grand Cherokee stating that the transmission can jump into gear while in park, so obviously it can happen.

That recall covers several years and several models.

Emotionally I agree with you but the lawful penalty for auto theft is not execution.

That's true, and I'm happy enough with it. But the lawful penalty for shooting a car thief - not someone who attempted to steal you car, failed and fled, but one who has mostly succeeded and is driving away in your car - ought not be very harsh.

I agree the penalty for theft should be harsh, especially for a repeat offender, but quick draw vigilante style revenge should also be punished. It's one thing to carry a weapon for self protection but that pistol doesn't give anyone the right to suddenly become self appointed judge, jury and executioner in a parking lot when said gun owner is pissed off about a property crime. People who do that should also be severely punished as a reminder to others, just as the car thief should receive a punishment that serves as a deterrent to others. If you believe in maintaining law and order, it needs to go both ways.
