Your tractors hp will limit you to a smaller baler such as a 4X4 or 4X5. Some baler models have the option of making both size bales. JD 456 or 457 might be a good choice or Vermeer 5400

Have a Vermeer 5400 Rebel. Pulled with 60 pto hp. Nice baler but would move to a 5410 or 5420 so I could get net rap. Makes a big difference on storage. John Deere makes a good baler but when I was comparing them the deere's were a lot lighter than the vermeer rebel.

At one time Vermeer advertised only needing 40 HP for a 4X5 baler

Vermeer rebel 5400, 5410, or 5420 are all 40 hp minimums. Plus the out weight the comparable Deere version by about 1,000 pounds. I think Deere says theirs needs 50-60 hp but not real sure on that.

I can recall the first round baler I saw in our part of the world. It was a Hawk-bilt, and it rolled the bale on the ground instead of cradling it in the belts that Vermeer used. But before that, there was a round bale system used by Allis-Chalmers and didn't use string wrap. It made a small round bale that weighed about 50 lb. A neighbor had one back in the '50's and stored his hay outside thru the winter.

I run a JD 375 that makes a 4' diameter by 5' long roll and is operated with 57 PTO hp. Nice combination and plenty of power. Guessing the roll weights around 750 give or take 100. When I bought it I was looking for a smaller baler than the 6' diameter by 5' long balers I had been running (JD 500 series). No 4x4s 5s or 6s were available. I find this bale is easily handled and only being 4' in diameter it's easy to see around on the FEL. However, I'm not sure that the larger diameter/shorter length of the 4xs isn't better for long term hay storage outdoors. Net wrap is popular and I feel that it does a better job of protecting hay for long term storage but twine wrap works for me and that is what I stayed with. It is more easily controlled (by me) in the feeding process.
