Who knows why this happens

When flicking a lighter (no gas applied)- little sparklets appear.
Who knows?

Seriously? Its flint... flint in the lighter under the steel wheel. When you flick it, you are turning the wheel which grinds on the flint to create sparks... Something done since the dawn of man.

Yes there may be something else going on here. Sorry that the video doesn't capture it but next time you start a fire you have to try it.
Without depressing the gas just flick the lighter (from a few feet away) at the hot embers.

**away from the lighter and at the surface of the dust (or embers), a chain reaction of tiny stars light up bright white really quickly like firecrackers without sound.

I was thnking that the first response was a correct analysis of what is happening but the flint should be completely burned out by the time it were to hit the embers of the fire or maybe not. But check it out sometime I can't find out anything on the net about it.
Unburned pieces of flint are 'flashing' into flame. It only lasts a brief sec..

ps. i think it's been answered so putting it to bed. And no it wasn't about what is flint.
I guess that's what I'm struggling with...what it's about...anyway.
If you liked that, check this out. This is what we had before we had lighters, after we had flint, but before it became portable.
Matches got more kids in trouble than anything else. Back in the day, we (kids) could not wait to strike our FIRST match. We had matches that you could light off your pants. You could light them using only your thumb nail. Now that was cool!

The match was used to ignite a charge in musket before flint, chemical energy....

FWIW...
MIT engineers conducted an empirical study on the efficacy of tin foil hats to block mind control rays and came to an astounding conclusion: Tin hats actually amplify frequencies which coincide with radio bands reserved for government use! Statistical evidence suggests the use of tin foil hats may, in fact, enhance the government’s invasive abilities leading the authors to speculate that it was the government that started the helmet craze for this reason.

Well....That sounds pretty dam conclusive if you ask me (and you did not ask me).
That's why
I switched to a cast iron soup pot many years ago. With a 2/0 welding cable as a ground wire to 200' of 3/4" copper clad ground rod.
Lighting can get into this head (that's why I'm super smart )

I tried that several years back, and yes, it did increase my IQ considerably, but the voices about drove me crazy, not to mention all of the rock concerts it played in my ears. I finally had to ditch it because I kept craving Tutti Frutti Ice cream and acquired a fixation on 60's and 70's Playboy Magazines.
