I understand the American car and a persons natural tendency to defend their buy, everyone defends their car purchase as best for them, not many admit mistakes on a forum. That's human nature. Saving the environment is a powerful marketing ploy, it's worked, just wait and read posts after mine to understand that power, people will defend their reasons. Question; Would have bought your Prius if it cost 12-16k more? The real price without your neighbors chipping in to help you buy it? HS

Those are better sources than the first, but they are talking about a different animal - The Plug-ins and all electric. It looks like most numbers are projected, any numbers on how many people have actually taken advantage of the incentives.

The state governments were also talking about a dis-incentive at one time (extra license fee) because the hybrids did not pay their fair share of gasoline tax used for roads - maybe we can also blame the Prius for the excessive amount of toll ways being built in Texas.

I don't think there are many that believe their Prius purchase was a mistake or they have to defend it. Stay focused to the facts, don't let your personal preferences confuse you.

I do understand your frustration on all Government incentives that you cannot benefit from. That is a frustration we all share.

BTW, the no guts comment is entirely off the mark. The electric motor provides a huge amount of torque when accelerating as any Hybrid owner can tell you. Another misconception.

I haven't seen a single Prius commercial extolling their hauling capacity or service in commercial delivery.

That's probably because they don't need to advertise it to those markets on television, radio or internet. Advertising dollars have to be used wisely. So they focus on the core group where they will get the most bang for their advertising buck. My guess is they would make good city government transportation. But when does city government make wise purchase decisions? :laughing:

I don't know about the green part. But the bottom line is the dollars on your pocket, and those are green.

They are bought for tax credits, government kick backs, dump them pricing to government, not mpg and maintenance costs. HS

I had 2150 trees planted on my property to control erosion. I got a government reimbursement that covered 75% of the cost for doing it. I guess I'm just as guilty as a Prius owner that got any tax incentives. :laughing:

I know you are on the right track buying cheaper gas cars that get less mileage.

Look at it this way. If your car currently gets 30MPG on the highway, and gas costs $3.25 per gallon and you drive 30K per year, you're going to spend $3250.00.

If you get a car that gets 45MPG, and gas costs $3.25 per gallon and you drive 30K per year, you're going to spend $2166.00.
That's a $1084 savings in fuel costs, but only if you stick with a gas car.
If you switch from a 30MPG gasser to a 45MPG diesel, the average price of diesel is over $3.80.
30000/45*3.80=$2533.00
That's only a $717.00 savings per year.
Its not worth the cost to trade up to a more fuel efficient car once you figure the energy savings payback.
And while you'll find a ton of people that say their VW's are great, you will still see the horror stories of folks that lost a timing belt and face a multi-thousand dollar engine rebuild.
Also, no one mentions the $500.00+ service required at 40K, which is on you, as the warranty runs out at 30K.
Buy 3-4 year old Impalas that get 30MPG hwy and drive them into the ground. They are big, roomy, hold 4 sets of golf clubs in the trunk while still seating 5, or even 6 if you find one with a bench seat.
