Generally speaking, drain the cooling system, knockout the leaking core plug with a punch, clean the hole and drive in a new core plug.

x2 - this is what I'd do on most any liquid cooled engine. Good luck

x3 - Plus..... depending on application, it may sometimes seem easier to drive the freeze plug into the block than it is to remove it, don't do it. Remove it!

Would also suggest putting the new freeze plug in the freezer to get ice cold; then apply bearing grease. should slip right in. Worked for me. RF

I agree on replacing the freeze plug. I have had to do this on several vehicles in the past and it's not a difficult job, often times accessing it easily is the most difficult aspect.

If you feel you need an immediate solution, you aren't confident in your ability to replace it, etc. You can try one of the many products available at any auto parts store that are made to seal head gasket, water pump seal, etc. leaks like Blue Devil, Bars Leaks, etc. I have actually had very good luck with these types of products on automotive leaks. I am generally not an advocate or believer in "miracle" or "easy" fix products.....I think a lot of them are B.S. but have to admit that I have felt forced to try several quick fix coolant leak products in the past and surprisingly they worked so well I never had to go back and make what I generally would consider to be a proper "permanent" repair/replacement.

If at all possible, use a brass replacement freeze plug. You can go to any well supplied automotive store and they can order the correct size for you. They don't rust out. Also, when ever I replace any freeze plugs I use Permatex Super 300 on the contact surfaces of the plug where it makes contact with the engine block. This helps to seal any irregularities and prevent small drip leaks. B.

ditto.. i like brass plugs. they seal better to cast.. they don't rust.. they won't mare the parent metal.

clean the hole.. add a dab of permatex #2 or similar.. like aviation form a gasket.. etc.. and knock in, dimple if needed, depending on style.

stay away from goops and glues and stopleaks. all they do is add sediments to the cooling system.. while they may work at fixing a small leak.. they may work at clogging a small passageway too! Plus they can fail at the most inopertune time...
