I need to put a 1600' fence around property, thought I would buy some 8' tall, 4" diameter, treated wood posts, push them into the ground about 2' and put a 6' wire fence up. I was going to get some 100' fence rolls with the small 2' squares on bottom to keep critters out of garden. Need a post driver, seen a few, Shaver, others. This would be a one time project, with repairs and add-ons down the road as I develop my farm. I don't need an auto-leveling, $6,000 driver, a couple of grand maybe, three tops. Any suggestions on driver and fence materials would be appreciated. TIA.

If you have time and don't mind working on projects, check craigslist. I picked up a old Shaver HD-8 for $250.00 had to drive 3 hours to get it. Sandblast and paint one new ram seal about $ 125.00 and some work. After using it a few times added a 2 foot piece of RR track to top for more driving force. Extra weight really helps when a post starts to go in crooked and you have to push it straight or in very dry conditions. Get the 4 to 5 inch round treated posts they seem to drive the best. I put in about 250 of them last year. 6 1/2 foot long for about a 4 foot tall finished fence.
Make sure it has the safety arm on it that holds the post, wear hearing protection. Also start in the least seen part of your property, your last few will be a lot better than your first ones as far as how straight they are.
Thanks
Scott

Thanx for the response. I have searched everywhere, looking, found a couple, nothing reasonable.

I have one that I picked up 2 years ago and pounded about 400 4-5" rounds with that Id be willing to sell
it truly is the only way to put in round posts for fencing
where are you located?

St. Louis by day, then Hannibal, MO Fri-Sunday, north east Missouri. What do you have?

I have a shaver HD-8

when I bought the place there wasn't a fence nor post on the property
now I have about 6 acres divided into 3 separate pastures along with a mud lot
I started out drilling and setting by hand the mud lot and smallest pasture the first year (that sucked)
I bought the shaver on e-bay for $900. and had the cylinder repacked, new rod, and replaced the high pressure line
put in about 400 round posts in a weekend
I used Kencove coated 12.5 gage wire and just drilled thru the posts and used the tension springs with ratchets to keep the tension where I want it
best horse fence for the money (very safe)
let me know if you're interested and I'll get it out and shoot some pictures this weekend of it
was holding on to it because a friend wanted to put up some posts but that was a year and a half ago
