CRP grass field - plow it up or leave alone

We have lost most of our quail to fireants, As you can guess, fire ant control and quail raising, has become HUGE $$ makers for some. From what I have seen in the upper panhandle and what I have heard, there wasn't much history of flocks of turkey or huge numbers of quail anyway. They where there, but not as "thick" as after better farming practices came into effect. Pheasant where brought over as Dave said to dd that to the hunting opportunity. I know the droughts we have experienced over the last few years have nearly decimated all three species, Pheasants more than the natives.

Dust bowl didnt help, but did encourage better land management and I have been told that is why they started the CRP program, but not sure if that is fact.

Thanks Richard.

So if I read that correctly CREP adds additional funding, at the state level, to the CRP program?

Yep...

That's part of the story. The CRP has its roots in the Soil Bank program of the 1950s. Another (and perhaps primary) objective of the Soil Bank program was to increase commodity prices and farm incomes by taking land out of production. See http://www.nrcs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/stelprdb1045666.pdf for details.

Steve, you are right. From the ranchers and farmers I have spoken to in our upper panhandle, it was initiated from the disaster of the dust bowl, then morphed into a commodities control driven theme.

Yep, that's how I understand it also. Somewhere in the fog of my mind it seems it was called Crop Reduction Program in it's infancy as well??? Idea being to reduce production to control price and minimizes subsidizing said price?

I don't recall "Crop Reduction Program" being used as official nomenclature. You may be thinking of the Acreage Reduction Program (ARP): Acreage Reduction Program - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
