I received a message about my electronic fel indicator today from another member. I realize it's buried in my Modification thread with no title to find it. So I'm making its own thread so people can find it in the future.

I wanted to make a bucket level rod just like the one I made for my B3030 which I really liked and used, but as with the factory bucket level rod and the one I made for the B3030, you really had to look at it to find the bucket level mark.
The one I made for the Grand L is a little different. You don't have to look.You can see level out of the corner of your eye.

I was going to put the indicator lights inside the cab but that bracket welded to the Fel was left sticking out doing nothing so I used the loop the factory level rod slid through to mount the electronic indicator. Seems to be welded at just the right angle for my indicator. Thanks kubota

How it was made.

The only modification to the tractor was center drilling and tapping the first 3/8 of the upper fel piston pin for a 5/16 stud.
After looking around for the best box to protect the lights, I thought of an outside electrical metal or plastic box. Not happy with the look of those so I figured I would just make one the way I wanted it to look.
I used a block of aluminum stock, milled it out so the arrow indicator lights would fit. The first one looked a little childish with the red arrows showing so I took the lights apart and that allowed me to have a much smaller box with the same size light affect. I cut a piece of 1/4 smoked plexiglass to cover it. It can be seen very well in direct sunlight as the video below shows.

For the rod and tube assembly I used 5/8 steel tubing and a 5/8 stainless steel rod, three 9/16 18 nuts (turned round and milled out to fit the tube) and three backup light switches.

Once mounted and the bucket was level. I marked and milled a groove in the 5/8 rod where the green light sensor was. Another groove just before level and a groove just after level. The grooves had to be on three different sides of the rod in three different places.

Whenever any of the three sensors hit the milled out section the corresponding light will light up. The 12 volt power goes to the positive wire on the led lights in the light indicator box and the switches work on ground only to make the connection, on and off to ground.
No matter what height the fel arms are, if the green light is lit up, the bucket is level once on the ground. Same as the Kubota level rod.


Does it work
The indicator works really well and It's a far better indicator of level then looking for that little bend to center itself in the loop welded to the fel arm, even though the Kubota factory level works well this can be seen a lot better and without the rattling rod. Besides it complements my central vac system.

When the red UP arrow is lit, the bucket is digging 1 inch, which I use my bucket to scrape and slightly dig often. This is a much clearer indicator of slightly digging then the factory loop just out of the bend.
Will it hold up? Time will tell. I have a large project starting next week at my other house . A new gravel driveway, new turn around and lots of fill and regrade the lawn. So that should put it to the test.

The factory level indicator has an adjustment to adjust whats level, (between different buckets I guess). I was going to thread the 5/8 rod at the end and add like a tie rod end for adjustment. But I used the level rod I made on the B3030 that was mounted the same way and never had an adjustment issue.
The only thing I use is the bucket and my forks. I don't need to know the level of my forks cause I have my camera for that. I figured I can always add the adjustment if I ever find the need for it. After all, I wanted to keep it a simple Fel indicator, nothing too fancy, so I left the adjustment off.

The video shows it working in full sunlight as you can see it can be seen easily.

In October I drove my tractor 5 miles on the road to another house we recently bought. It spent the month there grading a driveway and a new gravel turn around, grading some spots in the yard, and cleaning up brush around the 2 acre lot. I have now 82hrs on the tractor and I can tell you the Fel indicator works flawlessly never missed a beat.
I know some people use their tractors without anything and get by, to me a level indicator is important saves me time and eases the job.

At first I thought it would be kinda babyish having lights light up to tell you when the bucket is level. It not, it works really well, I don't even have to look at it as you can see red arrows or green line out of the corner of my eye.

A friend of mine that owns a Sand and Gravel Co saw the level indicator and was really impressed with it
He said that all the new big loaders and some he has, come with an automatic level stops for the bucket. So the full time operators that use loaders for a living all day long have an automatic stop when the bucket is level. Hmm…..
I no longer think my level indicator can be looked at as for inexperienced operators only.

I have read others bending their level rods. I'm not sure how you guys are bending your level rods. 700 hrs on my B3030 worn the bucket completely out (had to buy another bucket) and never dinged or bent my rod type level indicator. This one is made out of a 5/8 thick Stainless Steel rod in a metal tube.

On the Kioti DK series the level rod tube can become unscrewed and drop down allowing the rod to pretzel itself. It happened to mine in the first 10 hours, I straightned the rod, put the tube back together with locktite, on the threads and the jamb nut and also stippled the threads with an automatic center punch.. It hasn't come apart 200 hours later, and wont. I have heard several tales of this rod wadding up here, and it seems to me it is probably the same problem.

Yours was not a problem with the design, or location of the rod. Someone forgot to lock tight the nut. Which you solved.

And you shouldn't! I have the bent rod style indicator and use it out of the corner of my eye all the time. Your electronic indicator is just downright cool. I'd love to have one on my tractor!

I think the problem you're going to find with the remote sender tilt setup is, your still going to need some sort of mechanical device to fix level even though you're not level with the ground. Just like the bend in a stock rod type indicator, once your in that bend it stays that way until you curl the bucket.
With a free floating tilt sensor on your bucket you won't be able to finally set level until your bucket is on the ground right in front of your work.

For example after dumping the bucket I set the bucket level again while I'm on the move with the Fel arms still coming down. I think with a electronic tilt sensor riding across the yard to pickup another load that light will be blinking in and out of level the whole way. Soon you'll say I had enough of these Disco lights in the cab. There has to be some sort of mechanical device that keeps it locked level with the plane of the tractor. Therefore the rod.

I don't know if you have an IPhone , but there is a tilt sensor App. Try it in your hands and see how sensitive it is, then walk around and hold it on zero. There is a damping on it which makes it even worse, makes it slow, so you have to wait for it to reach zero, then if you past zero you have to wait again to go back to zero. Since you can't see the meter you're working that curl back and forth hoping you'll stop at the right spot. Imagine that strapped to your bucket hooked to a light in your cab.

Plus on the sensor your looking for, you won't have the caution red arrow light to let know your coming up on level. Like the factory rod ,you can see your coming up to the bend.
On my rod, zero is fixed, that is the short groove. The longer milled grooves in the rod are for the red lights, that lets you know your coming up to level.

That is the reason for two arrows and one green if you past green you have to know which way to curl the bucket. So you need three lights. Not sure if a remote sensor will have that capability.
Boy after this long post, aren't you guys happy you have the factory rod and it works.

Thanks Murphy, kOua, salamander, Beltman and others I appreciate your kind words. I know it looks like a lot of work, but I enjoyed making the project and the fact that it works so smooth in the end, made it even better.
I enjoy using it. It will work the best at night while moving snow. As for making them as a kit? I don't think there would be that much of a market, since the factory rod works well. Maybe the people with bucket cams, and central vacuums installed on their cab tractors might be interested. But who knows one of those guys:confused3:

I'm jealous and the the night time snow removal was exactly the application I was thinking about when I saw your project, Waxman! Well done :thumbsup: I think though, this is a little too ambitious for me at this point. That said, I am going to light up the night with a bunch of LEDs very soon. :D

I've got a B3200 with the LA504 loader - and have thought about retrofitting the level indicator from one of the new LA524 loaders onto it - but I like your solution better. A parts list would be great - this looks like a cool winter project.

Making it was pretty simple.
Thinking of how to make it was the hard part.

3) backup light switches. has to be normally closed. Part # BWD S26022 Advance Auto Parts
3) 9/16 fine thread nuts for the sensors to mount into.
2) red 12 volt led arrow lights or just plain led lights. Amazon, Ebay
2) Green 12 volt Led's mounted side by side. Ebay
1) solid block of aluminum.
1) 1/4 inch smoked plexi glass.
4) small brass machine screws.
1) 3/8 bolt to mount thru the existing bracket on the fel threaded into the back aluminum box.
3) rubber coil wire boots.
1) 3 ft Stainless Steel 5/8 rod Graingers.com
1) 3 ft Steel tubing 5/8 ID .... Lowes was the only place the 5/8 rod fit into the tubing, other stores the 5/8 rod would not fit loosely inside the labeled 5/8 tubing (A China thing.)

At first I was just going to have four round led lights, 1 red, 2 green and 1 blue. Shown below a prototype.
Hot, Level, Cold. Hot (red) would be digging Cold (blue) would be bucket tipped up. Level double green.

Then I found the arrow lights, I removed them from the red plastic housing to make them smaller. Same with the green lights I took the plastic housing off and put two together to form sort of a green led line. And the bracket welded on the fel arm was the perfect place for it.
You can make the box or use any box you can find , I didn't like my options so I made one. Once you have the rod and sensors made as a trigger, you can use anything for lights.

Machine the back of the nuts half round to fit the round pipe. Weld the three nuts to the rod housing,
If I could weld like 4shorts you would see nice perfect, fine quality welds around the nuts but I can't so I filed them smooth, they were ok, but if the welds are not perfect I don't want to see them.. Perfect welds showing around the nuts would of looked better, and more a factory look IMO.

Assemble the rod and tube on the tractor and set the bucket level, while bucket is level, mark the rod thru the "center nut"of the three. That is the short, level groove.
Use a 1/2 round file to make the groove. I used the Bridgeport at first but finished up with a hand file.
Then do the other two.
