Want a new laptop but do I want Windows 8?

I've been running Norton Internet Security on my old Windows 7 machine and the new Windows 8 machine came with 15 months of Norton Internet Security. Of course I updated to Windows 8.1 on the new one. So I had two separate Norton accounts. And the new computer account was registered with my new e-mail address while the old one was registered with an e-mail address that was de-activated last month. Now of course you can use one Norton product on up to 3 computers. Confusing enough? Anyway, I just yesterday went online to Norton's support site and to a "chat" session and the lady there combined it all to one account, one product key, one e-mail address for both computers, and added the days I had remaining on the old one to the new one. So at least both computers are running the same thing now, and I won't have to renew my subscription for more than a year and a half.:) So I'm happy with Norton, and I like their password manager.

Thanks,Bird

Now, this is why you join the TBN. Great advice like this and I'm as shocked as the next guy but it worked and I now have Norton with my old expiration date. Not really sure what happened and I'm OK with that.

Man, I think I would hold off before jumping aboard Win 8.0. Win 8.1 fixed some of my dislikes about 8.0 (such as accelerating the appearance of "charm" so as to speed up signing off.) And I am not a "power user" so i simply ignore much of Win 8.1's "improvements." I found the generational improvements that Win 8.0 unleashed were really no big deal and caused me to fuss for extended periods to figure out how to get what I had learned on prior Windows and its Excel and Word apps were major PIA's for me.

I 'm sure YMMV and good luck.
Ed

Maybe I am just too old for unnecessary changes.

Glad you got a good deal and a way out if not happy. Irrespective of anyones comments to the contrary there are many suitable solutions and likely you have picked one. As you no doubt noted Bird is a good source of practical information. He has been there and done that in lots of arenas and he doesn't blow smoke, just tells it like he experienced it. (OK, Bird, I said it, now when do I get the $5? you promised ;) ;) ;) )

You may want to take a look at the Apache open source software. It is free. It is compatible with Microsoft Office and does what office does. Using it instead of Office saves you quite a bit of $. We run it on all 5 of our operating computers. It is good stuff.
Patrick ;) ;)

The $5 is in the mail, Pat. Of course you know what the mail is like these days.

And after using the simple Microsoft Works for years, it's been interesting lately playing with Microsoft Office. I probably should have used the free software instead of buying Office, but I wanted to see what Office was really like. And as with lots of software, it'll do a lot more than I'll ever have a need, or even a use, for.

Hey, he promised me $10 but I have to wait until something freezes over. His message was garbled so I'll keep checking the mail. :D

as a new 8.1 ( 8.0 ) user. am I wrong in assuming to turn off.. you click on the username / profile icon at the top right of the desktop, log out, and then from the logged out screen pull it up a lil to hit the 1/0 button, then select shut down?

any other easier way?

Right click on the "Start button" and make your choice

Correct..

Or, in Power Management, you can set what closing the lid, pushing the power button and sleep button do... I have mine set up to Hibernate with the power button, sleep with the sleep button, and turn off the screen with lid closed ('do nothing'). Of course, holding the power button for 4 sec will do a shut down, but thats the BIOS doing it.

I had most of windows OS, I'm not a geek but every one of them paled compared to this apple product I have. I've had this for over two years with not one regret other than not getting this sooner. There is no bugs out there for them. Also very fast compared to any windows. just my opinion.
Check out the Macs

I'm just glad it recovered from power loss during install.

still not sure how that makes it more secure.
