Want a new laptop but do I want Windows 8?

   / Want a new laptop but do I want Windows 8? #581
Again, I'm the OP and everything is going fine with the new computer. It will work for me.

It came with 30 days of Norton but when I tried to insert my purchased Norton disc I used with my other computer, the screen said that the version of Norton did not work with Windows 8. Well, the box says it does and I installed it on Windows 7 so what's the big deal.

Either I figure it out in the 0 days or I'm going to Kaspersky as others here have suggested.

Any ideas?

I've been running Norton Internet Security on my old Windows 7 machine and the new Windows 8 machine came with 15 months of Norton Internet Security. Of course I updated to Windows 8.1 on the new one. So I had two separate Norton accounts. And the new computer account was registered with my new e-mail address while the old one was registered with an e-mail address that was de-activated last month. Now of course you can use one Norton product on up to 3 computers. Confusing enough? Anyway, I just yesterday went online to Norton's support site and to a "chat" session and the lady there combined it all to one account, one product key, one e-mail address for both computers, and added the days I had remaining on the old one to the new one. So at least both computers are running the same thing now, and I won't have to renew my subscription for more than a year and a half.:) So I'm happy with Norton, and I like their password manager.

It also wont sync your preferences if you have more than one computer you use.. Mine syncs between my tower, laptop, xbox, and windows phone.. It also means I get texts and messages on any one I happen to be logged into.
I don't want or need to sync my preferences between my work computer and my phone or home computer...

No power outage here, just a snow outage with 3 " packed on the Hughesnet disk.

On the Norton problem. You need to uninstall it from the old computer, if it is a 3 computer Norton 360 unless you haven't used the other two.
Then you go to your Norton account on the computer that you uninstalled from or if you have units left just go to your Norton account.
If you had to uninstall one to make room go to that computer in your account and delete it from the list. Norton will then check to see if you are honest.
Your disk will not work with 8.1 ( needs a patch) and is out of date anyway for security updates.
From your new computer, go to your Norton account and download Norton 360 or whatever you have. It will download and install with all the up to date security updates and the patch for W 8.1. You may have to register it then while there or it may be automatic. I don't remember. You will get it and your days remaining will show.
I had 340 days left and it worked fine. I normally buy a disk in the fall on sale for $30 or more dollars off locally. Never use it, just the code number on the disk card to renew for another year. The updates keep the software up to date automatically as well as installing security updates, so it is always the latest edtion for the system you are using. You probably know that Norton offers the same discount on-line but they like to wait a few days after yours expires to try to get the full price.
The AV tools built into W8.1 are supposed to be good but I like Norton 360 for the other tools that come with it. The new version for 8.1 claims to be
much less of a hog than the older versions.

We only got 3.5 inches of snow from a predicted 6-8. How much did you get in your part of OH?

But we shouldn't assume that Soundguy or his wife want to limit the features, as you did, unless they know the details.
That might create another thread bitching and moaning of how it doesn't work as advertised.
Not from soundguy but likely from a lurker that is following this thread.

I didnt read all the responses so someone may have already mentioned it.

You should be able to call up MS on the phone after your purchase your new machine (with win 8) and request to downgrade the license to win 7. (win 7 pro 64bit) You may be able to request an install cd at that point also.

If you dont want to go that route, you can build your own and add win 7 stand alone disc. Or purchase a laptop or something off Craigslist with a valid win 7 license sticker (located on the bottom) and use that "code" for your new machine.

We got an inch or two around here and that was still an inch or two more than they could handle. They actually try to plow an inch of snow.

Again, I'm the OP with the new Toshiba 17.3 laptop and I absolutely love it. Windows 8 is different than W7 but it's easy to understand with my limited use. It does take a little getting used to but it's very serviceable and I don't see any problems. I am glad I went the way I went and especially glad with the Toshiba.
