Well after nursing my pt425 for close to 2 years the starter finally died. Put a new one on today and wow! What a difference it made. It was about 30 degrees and I did the replacement outside. I was sure I would have trouble getting it started with it being so cold out, but not so. The starter turned the motor over like it was 70 degrees. Why did I wait so long?!

That's great news!
Such is human nature, i jiggled and cajoled a bad ignition switch for months before it finally failed completely, then i had to change it.

That matches my experience with my 1445. The new starter felt like it was 2x more powerful than the original, but that's probably why it failed...

Congratulations on the upgrade!

All the best,

Peter

How hard was it to change out?

Changing a starter on the Deutz engine is very straightforward.
  1. Disconnect the battery
  2. Disconnect the starter
  3. Unbolt the PT starter solenoid (not the one on the starter)
  4. Remove two bolts on the starter
  5. Slide the old starter out
  6. Slide the new starter in
  7. Bolt starter down
  8. Fasten the starter solenoid on
  9. Rewire the new starter
  10. Reconnect the battery
  11. Start the engine.

There is lots of room to work in. Just don't do it right after using the tractor- there is only about two inches of clearance to the muffler.

All the best,

Peter

That sounds like a pretty straight forward process. The smaller ones aren't bad, except not have any room to do most of what you said.

Peter,
I thought about changing mine out. However, there is no room in the tub to get my hands near the starter. I think when my starter finally goes I will have to pull the motor out of the tub to get to it.

Believe me, I know how that goes. I keep finding bolts that are inaccessible with my fingers and the wrenches that I own...

Servicing the Deutz is a gift compared to many engines that I have worked on.

All the best,

Peter
