Anyone else hate the new light bulbs?

I knew a guy that put his old truck on "life support" on cold nights. It was a drop light under the hood and a trickle charger.

Spiker .........I agree with you totally about how "savings" from CFLs in winter fail to take into account the reduced heat that incandescents give a room. In Ontario here starting Jan 1 we are told we will no longer be able to buy incandescents, I don't believe it will happen, but I have stocked up and live close to USA border. Not that I try to heat my house with incandescent bulbs , but for example I try to keep my insultated garage no less than 36 degrees farenheit, so my paint won't freeze etc etc...... so I start a fire in woodstove every second or third day, in winter, but sometimes I just need to leave a couple lights on in the garage and that will be enough to keep it above freezing until I get around to starting a fire.
I find leaving a few lights on is far less worrying than plug in a portable heater that could spark or fry.
Yes I have a few of the new fangled ones , but they burn out quite often too. ...and trust me they don't get disposed with the "hazmatt" method, they just get buried in the regular garbage bag....I didn't ask for mercury bulbs to become the standard and it was not thought out well by the politics behind it.
As for summer I barely use lights in house in summer and sun goes down at 10 pm and thats bed time. I rarely use window airconditioner.

Check out halogen incandescent bulbs which are supposed to be available in Canada.

If what you want is the heat from a light bulb, using multiple CFL's would probably give you roughly the same heat as one old energy wasting bulb without using more power. It's not like you are facing an insolvable problem.

Why are they outlawing incandescent bulbs... taking away someone's sensible choice to buy and pay for it, Maybe for a chicken house, and at the same time pushing for all vehicles to have "daytime running lights" which utterly wastes millions of gallons of polluting fuel, to power automotive lights in bright daylight?:ashamed:

DRL's make a vehicle more visible.

That could be true but they run excess power off engine burn out alternators sooner too. That uses up more gas as mentioned, not sure where Gov is at on that one GM does it but I dont see it on Fords or Imports often other than some of the high end stuff that uses LED lighting so consume less power.

AS someone said about using CFLs to warm the well house, DON'T DO IT. the CFLs are poor in cold temps and are prone more to shorting out in wet areas like a well house. The Ballast and Ignition parts of these CFLs are electronics that can be damaged with running in the low temps outside unless they are made for it. No one is going to buy the more expensive outdoor versions to stick in the well house, what $0.40 cent Incandescent bulbs work well for. About 3 weeks back we bought a 12 pack of 60watt bulbs for $3.99 on sale, so got them pretty cheap! Got home and one was broken in the package (was OK in the store as I looked at them like Eggs.) Guess something crushed it in the trunk on way home lol...

I have a Heat Lamp that i put onto the tractor FEL when it gets REAL cold shine it onto the injection pump n& lines they get toasty and ole diesel fires right up. I added a block heater to the lower rad hose in-line style for 20bucks too after I was stranded at the end of the driveway in 16" of snow w -20 temps a few years ago... I got it started OK with several things including the heat lamps and used a pair of 500watt halogen work lamps under it for 30 min...

I have absolutely nothing against LED, 4'-8' fluorescent, and to a degree CFL's.
My BIG problem is being mandated to buy/not buy a certain product.

I doubt that is really true. You do many things because you are mandated to do them, and you do them willingly. If you don't see the benefits, you resist. That's human nature.

Running lights/daylight headlights contribute to safety. Not being safe on the road has costs, and I'll bet they are greater than the fuel or wear and tear on an alternator which is going around whether lights are on or not. With LED lights, that couldn't amount to much anyways.

So, have they been able to do away with the annoying 60Hz flicker that LED and fluorescent lights seem to possess? That makes my eyes tired. We use LED Christmas tree lights. They have the flicker. My wife doesn't notice it, but it's hard on my eyes. Wears me out. I try to avert my gaze whenever they come on. Perhaps they can speed up the rate to make it indistinguishable, like computer screens. I bump the refresh rate to 90Hz or more on my laptop and the problem seems to disappear.
