"get shut of"

"She needs to get shut of that man!"

Similar to DaveR's post, I grew hearing "get shed of" as meaning to get rid of something. I thought it was them saying another word, but I was quickly corrected when I used the other 4-letter s-word. :D

Talking too fast!!!! Seems most people on TV news shows talk way to fast. Sure hard to understand at times. And so many females with a gravel Gurti voice.

When I get speed talking on the PH I tell them "I'm old & my ears hear slow, - Slow down.) Some rattle off PH # so fast its like one word & they expect you to write it down.

Most of these folks are from the NYC & DC area.

That seems to be accurate, at least for my state. We called it "pop" or "coke", unless we were eating a Moon Pie, and then it was an "R.C. Cola".
.

It used to be pronounced "R O C Cola" in NC.

Robert Cook Edwards was the President of Clemson University when I arrived there in 1977. He and wife, Louise, were loved by the students and were affectionately known as "R.C. and Moonpie." Students now sponsor an annual "R.C. and Moonpie Downhill Run" in their honor.

Downhill Mile runners race straight to the ESSO Club (a local tavern of some renown). Recreational Downhill runners run half the course, chug an RC Cola and eat a Moonpie, and then run the last half of the race.

What do y'all call a water hose or a hose pipe?

Jim, I had the misfortune of spending a New Years Eve in a hospital several years ago, and the dinner tray that night included a long stemmed (plastic) champagne glass and a bottle of Perrier. I was happy for the opportunity to try it, since I'd only heard of it, and I was even happier that I hadn't paid good money for it. Needless to say, I've never tasted any since.

I was probably about 12 years old when I was walking down an alley in Ardmore, OK, early one morning and the back door to the R.C. Cola bottling plant was open and I asked an employee just inside the door if I could come in and watch what they were doing. He said I could, and I only watched a few minutes. And after seeing how filthy that place was . . . . well, I've still never drank an R.C. Cola.

What do y'all call a water hose or a hose pipe?

Years ago a siphon hose was commonly referred to as a "Georgia Credit Card"

And do you fasten that hose to a bib, hydrant, or a faucet?

Bruce

the bib is the adapter that screws into the spigot

And do you fasten that hose to a bib, hydrant, or a faucet? Bruce
.

A faucet is mounted to a sink.

A spigot is on the side of your house.

A hydrant is what a fire truck uses or one of the vertical frost free kinds of spigots you use at the barn.
