The sliding gear shifter rails have a stops(parts key #24) that the collar shift doesn't have. Plus the shift rail tabs that shift handles sit in are different for each type trans.

Wow, most excellent response! Mystery solved. There were two transmissions and previous owner replaced decal with wrong one.

Here's the decal on it. I can easily now tell its newer.

To add to the confusion. The European spec tractors were also shipped to Canada. During the 80's and 90's when the Canadian dollar was only worth 70-80 cents US. Tractor Jockeys hauled thousands of cheap used equipment into the US . Much to the annoyance of US dealers who could not compete price wise.

My 820 had the collar shift transmission which allowed you to pick a gear with the right hand shifter and then could shuttle between low forward and reverse in gear. If you can't put the right shifter in any of the four gear positions and have reverse it is a sliding gear transmission. All that I have seen had the collar shift, never seen the sliding gear version.

I will verify that is indeed the sliding gear version when the shop brings it back this week. I do however know that it will only go into reverse in 3rd gear. I will put it in the 7th and 8th gear position to determine if there are only 7 forward speeds. I assume this will be the determining factor without splitting the transmission?.?

UPDATE: Dealer just verified that it is indeed a 7 speed sliding gear transmission. He was going to order the correct label (part no. t25547) but it is not available anywhere. I guess my next step is to have a label made. Thank you for the wealth of knowledge you folks here offer!

There must be someway to grind the blocks off the shifter rails. And gain the creeper reverses and 8th gear?

I may have the sliding gear label you need. Having bought the label kits in the past the 7 speed label wasn't used, if I find it you can have it.
