They are starting to drill test wells just a bit north of here in Southwestern Idaho. They figure there might be some large natural gas reserves here as well.

So far, the only way to process the tar shale is to strip mine it. The formation underlies part of Colorado too. It's much bigger than the map indicates. They have known about it for years.

Yes, I sure did. In todays world, 2 million is not expensive at all, when drilling in such a target rich environment. Ken Sweet

At 10,000 to 20,000 ft deep, I doubt strip mining is viable? Ken Sweet

If you read at the bottom of the page linked, it mentions a shallow oil reservoir that is being replenished by the "down dip" (what ever that is) as it does in a nearby field.
