The diesel fuel now has very little sulpher in it which acted as a lubricant. I also use road diesel because it's close and I only get 5 gallons at a time. I do add a Stanadyne brand additive for anti-gelling, lubricant, lower cetane, and injector cleaner. It's only a few cents per gallon and the engine starts and runs fine even in single digit temps along with no injector or pump problems so far in 600 hours. Maybe it would be fine without it but helps give me peace of mind. There have been many posts/discussions about an additive and some call it snake oil and a waste of money. Most agree that you need some form of anti-gelling additive if your temps are low but debate the lubricant property value. I guess do your own research and decide for yourself.
