I have an older (maybe a 53) MF35 utility. The 3point hitch usually won't come up at all. The gear case oil seems to be frothy as if it had water in it. Would that cause this problem? What what I replace oil with?

If it's a MF35, I doubt it's a '53!
A good UTF (Universal Tractor Fluid) is adequate for an MF 35. Permatran is the spec MF replacement fluid but it tends to be spendy. DO NOT USE HYDRAULIC FLUID.Remember the final drive is also in the hydraulic sump so it needs a transhydraulic fluid.
I'd susupect a problem with the control valve or the linkage might be causing your lift problem.

I don't know where you got that serial number but the first Massey Ferguson 35 was made in 1960 and the first serial number was 204181. It was preceeded by the Ferguson TO-35 which was was first made in made in 1954 and had a starting serial number of 140001. ( Ref. Yesterday's Tractors research & Info Section-Serial Numbers)
Your number looks like a casting number to me.

- Getting old. Sold the ranch. Sold the tractors. Moved back to the city.
Froth means water in the hydraulic fluid. Need to drain the old stuff and replace.
That number is a casting number. On my 1964 MF135 diesel the serial number tag was located in the area around the battery tray. I had to remove the battery to find it.

Thanks for the info. I changed the oil, the 3point hitch arms are now loose, with the engine running I can lift them up and down and they will stay up but it feels spongy. Is there a way to bleed this system? The number I got is on a plate on the left side of the dash,it sure looks like a serial#

It will bleed it self, but its important to replace any rubber boots around gear level to prevent water from coming inn.

Up and down, up and down, up and down till it gets hard....................... the tractor's hydraulics. I had the MF 35 with the 3 cyl Perkins diesel. A real tugger. Sold it because the clutch was too hard on my injured left knee and I needed power steering.
