attaching pto shaft

My new NH Boomer 50 (hydrostatic) has just been delivered. When trying to atttach my mower's pto shaft I find that the tractor end seems to be locked in position making it difficult to line up the grooves, particularly because I can't rotate the mower either. The tractor has a simple on/off switch for the PTO but apparently no neutral position. The only way I can get the shaft on is to switch on and off and hope for a chance alignment. Very hit and miss. Would be grateful for suggestions. Cheers,

I'd suggest hooking up your mower to the three point hitch first and lift it off the ground a bit. You should be able to then rotate the PTO on the mower(spin the blades slowly) until the PTO splines line up with the Tractor PTO, then slide it on. Good luck!

Are you trying to attach the PTO with the tractor running? If so, kill the engine and then try to turn it.

Also a long screw driver through the u-joint of the mower driveshaft can help turn that end.

Try engaging the tractor's PTO with the engine OFF and the key IN YOUR POCKET!
That might allow some rotation of the tractor's PTO stub shaft.

Strange though, this locked stub shaft. Have never come across this in other tractors I have owned.

Have tried with both engine on and off, but not the slightest movement. Anyway rotating the implement side should do the trick. I had wondered if I was missing something on the tractor side.

The straighter you can line up the tractor PTO shaft with the mower shaft, the easier it will be to connect. You can judge how the mower should mate with the tractor by comparing the position of the tractor and mower shafts. For example, if the tractor pto has a raised tooth exactly at the top the mower needs the groove at the top to line up with it. Also, lube the shaft with something like fluid film.

The shaft on my DK35 can be rotated slightly (1/10 turn?) counter clockwise. But as others have stated, it is easier to rotate the implement with a screw driver or similar. I can rotate my snow blower by stepping on the auger.

My older NH has a brake on the PTO shaft, it cannot be turned and that is normal. I've honestly never tried Roy's suggestion of engine off and PTO engaged.

I have the LS version of your Boomer, and it has a PTO brake, so you won't be able to move it by just grabbing it with your hands.

Some people add an overriding clutch to make hooking up easier, and I've heard of someone grinding on a crescent wrench until the jaws matched up with the splines on the PTO shaft, and that gave them enough leverage so they could turn it by hand.

I normally just lift the implement, and rotate the blades by hand, but I'm not really fond of sticking any part of my body under a raised implement, so I normally use a short piece of wood to push on the blades.

I know on my Brush-Hog tiller and brushog,I hook up the three point lift and rotate the pto shaft by hand.
