Traction old vs new - it's not always hp - interesting video

Not that it played a role here but, an advantage of a reciprocating steam engine is that it has almost full torque available right from the start.

Even at zero RPM.

Did you guys read the YouTube comments?

One guy said he couldn't tell if the Deere had a Chevy or Mopar in it. I thought that was funny.

As a practice, I try to avoid reading the YouTube comments - it destroys my hope for humanity.

Set the pull chain level, Engage 4wd, and go in a creeper gear. That stunt looks to me like the new machine was handicapped on purpose to amuse people It all minimized the traction of the new machine.

County fair type setting... just for show type thing... you are likely correct. Level the playing field like you said and the newer tractor would stand a better chance... of not getting spanked quite so baddly! I think weight alone is a huge advantage for the steamer.

As with Facebook, which I do not participate in, one must realize it's just words on the internets. They don't really mean anything.

Great quote!

I liked all the learned discussion about torque, which as kco points out, doesn't play a part since the JD was able to spin it's tires with no trouble.

Torque doesn't play a part? It plays a part, along with weight/traction, in the fact that the steamer can yank the JD around at will. The steamer's combination of torque and weight/traction exceeds the JD's combination of torque and weight/traction.

I'll bet the steamer could pull the JD with all 4's digging and the chain sloped the other way. I have a 1950 JD MC crawler and weight, traction and gearing my friends, all the HP in the world isn't worth a tinkers **** without any one of the three. I'll bet that steamers top speed is slower than the JD's lowest speed. Maybe if they put the money they got in that engine into ballast and gears they would stand a chance.
