Are our schools so bad that fourth graders can do no better than what we see here?

I have three grand daughters in grade school. Two are in large city schools. They do not teach spelling at all. The schools say, "oh they'll learn it as they go along".

I haven't specifically asked them about grammar. But I'm guessing it's not taught either. If they hand write a message or letter their spelling and grammar is so bad I have to reread the sentences to even understand what they are trying to say. This saddens me very, very much.

I asked Kaisha who is 10 about diagraming sentences?? She gave me that look that young people give old people when they wonder if they've lost their sanity........ I'm taking that as a NO. I asked her about spelling lessons. Got the same look,,,, followed by "Grandpa we already talked about this, I don't do spelling lessons".

That is crazy. Our teachers gave us a word list on Monday with a test on Friday, every week, 1st - 6th grade. In the lower grades we would use the words throughout the week in our writing and grammar lessons, in the later years we were on our own to learn them.

The teachers probably don't have the ability to teach spelling and grammar, sad as it may be.
