Not exactly shoveling snow off roofs, but pulling it off solar collectors: we have PV collectors on a not so steep roof, about 4/12, and when they have 6" of snow covering them, they don't produce any power, which costs us money. I have a long pole with a wooden blade to pull the snow down, carefully, and that pole gets heavy! Can't walk on them like a roof surface.

Yup, I live in the middle of Michigan's mitten and we got hammered with ice big time this time around. About two years ago we made an executive decision to invest in a whole house stand by power plant. The driving force in making this decision is the fact the power grid is on an average of 60 years old and for what ever reason, there is little effort on the part of the utilities to step up to the plate and improve/replace the aging infrastructure.
What really scares me is the frequency our plant comes on line. Well, anyway, the beers cold and the shower's hot.

Just a quick tip i gleaned from a TV show of all places!!: use your grill or BBQ to heat up some decent size rocks outside and then take then them inside and put on a suitable surface. Haven't tried it yet but should work. My $.02.

Wasn't that how a family survived being stuck in the mountains in a Jeep recently?

I went out this morning to take advantage of the 33* to mess with my roof. My SolaTubes are back in daylight again with the ice crust off.

My stink pipe had a perfect, air-tight ice cap on it. Heads up if you haven't checked yours.

The temp dropped back below freezing, so I had to quit. Metal roofs have their advantages, but staying upright on one when it's below freezing with snow crystals sprinkled around isn't one of them.

Wow, good tip on the stink pipe. I never considered those getting iced over. From being up there I know there is usually a warm stench rising up from the tank.

Our roof would be just as challenging right now, its still more melting ice than shingles.

I do wish we had a lot more snow than we've got so far this winter.
As for roofing, I've got a steel roof and forget about going up there in the winter. The roof trusses are on 24" centers, so I don't worry about the snow load. A couple of days above freezing and down comes all the snow. Makes it a PITA to shovel off the deck, but I don't mind all that much. When the roof unloads, the cats all run and hide under the bed.

Ha. Our snow will creep down the roof once in awhile if the air warms. Our young dog heads for her "thunder" corner.

this is one of the lightest snow seasons ive ever seen here in north Idaho. We had 6-7" last november...all melted off. Then 3" about 1 week ago...mostly melted. Got another 1" today.

I mean..why bother.
