Foaming Diesel Fuel

Yesterday, I stopped at the local Shell station to fill two 5 gal.
containers with diesel fuel. I filled the first container with no
problem but while filling the second container, the fuel was
foaming excessively, with resultant foam overflow. I had to
reduce the flow from the nozzle to a very slow rate in order
to finish filling the container without foam overflow.

Does anyone have any idea what may have caused the foaming?
I haven't poured this fuel into the tractor yet, since I'm not
sure if there's a problem with it. Has anyone else experienced
this while filling a container?

It happens all the time when I'm filling cans at a service station, I just keep moving around three cans to let the air bubbles settle while I'm adding more to a different one. It only takes seconds for them to drop back. It's just the airation of the fluid as it splashes around.

I always assumed when that happened the tank was getting low. Could be wrong.

The fuel in my area also foams a lot, it doesn't matter what gas station I get it from. I always assumed its normal. It also bio diesel in my area so I don't know if that makes it worse or not.

We I was active duty, we always had to wait for the foam to settle before we could finish filling our jerry cans. Foamed a lot.

Normal. Diesel is more viscous than gasoline; it traps air in fuel as it swirls into containers; foam forms.
