Anyone plant these Li'l-BIG 2-3 ft. apple trees from Gurneys ?

Never heard of that one in particular but we have lots of dwarf apple trees down at the orchard. Unbelievable what those little trees can produce. :thumbsup:

I planted 3 dwarf apple trees last summer, bought them from a nursery local. They took real well and stayed healthy even through the heat (kept them watered though). Nursery instructed me to prune them back during the winter which I will do soon. The idea is to prune to stimulate stronger growth because the young limbs are too weak to support fruit. I keep pinching back the buds because I don't want apples growing until the limbs are stronger.

By the looks of things in the first year, I think the trees are really gonna produce in a couple of years.

By the way, I have deep roots in northeastern CT, moved away in 2004.

I've purchased fruit trees, grape vines and strawberries from XXXXXX catalog in the past (I say XXXXXX catalog because several of them are all owned by the same company. Beware). The cherries were not the same species I ordered, the grapes were all supposed to be red, white and purple seedless, they didn't fruit for 5-6 years and when they did they were all concord, and the ever bearing strawberries were June bearing. And I got two different species of apricot when I ordered only one. Two of the dwarf apple trees have remained small, but the third keeps going and going. So, buyer beware. See if you can find them at local nurseries where you can get some service.

MossRoad is right on. The worst plants I've ever had have been mail order. And many of those companies are all owned by the same company. The lack of quality is just not worth the price savings. I'm lucky that I live close to Miller's Nursery. They are a mail order, but I can go and pick out the biggest and best plants they have. If I was mail ordering, I'd expect the person to take the smallest plant they have so it will fit easiest in the box.

And don't forget the "substitution" clause that some mail order places have. If they don't have what you want, they sometimes will substitute something else. So be sure to read that carefully.

We feel for that ruse one time....you ever try to plant a bare root Hosta? I must've planted them all upside down and they all died.

The only thing that has survived are the rose bushes. The plants themselves are badly shaped but did produce some flowers.

I will only buy local from now on.
