I had just rebuilt the hydraulic pump and put it back together. It started fine ran fine, hydraulics were working, engine started slowing, bucked and lots of smoke out the exhaust and died, will not turn over. I removed the hydraulic pump but no change. oil ok, etc.
any ideas?

Did your engine fail to turn over when the hydraulic pump failed the first time? If not, what made you think it might be your problem now? Why didn't you just grab a socket and ratchet and turn the engine with the pulley on the front of the engine's crankshaft? Heck! I can squeeze the fan belt on my tractor and just rotate the fan to turn the engine over a bit to see it is not locked up.

I think you have a simple electrical problem. When you turn on the key, does the PTO light illuminate on the instrument panel. If so, change fuse #2. Otherwise check your battery for 12.5 volts or above and make sure the terminals are clean and the battery terminals are clean. Remember, if your PTO is engaged or the Range lever is out of neutral, your engine will not crank over. If the PTO light is on when the PTO is not engaged, replace fuse #2 below the instrument panel.

The engine tries to turn over but only rotates a bit. no mechanical noises etc. the only thing that changed was the pump and I thought maybe it froze up. definitely not an electrical problem. I have not tried to turn the engine over by hand. Will do so tomorrow.

What has your weather been like temperature wise? Could you be gelled up? Just a thought.

Checked engine rotation with socket. It rotates freely about 1/2 turn both directions and stops solidly.
Any ideas on what might be bent/broken before I tear into it? I have rebuilt many gas engines but never got into a diesel before.

did you check engine oil level? I'll bet that it's over full (with hyd fluid). Hyd pump probably puked a seal, sending hyd fluid into crankcase. Too much oil & it went thru PCV passage into intake causing hydraulic lock... I HOPE I'm wrong because that probably means a bent con rod. Take all injectors out and crank engine with wrench - see if oil shoots out injector holes...

+1, Great advice! Many people see the outer seal on the hyd pump blown and change it. Unfortunately, their inner seals are also blown and in need of replacing. This leads to a premature 2nd failure with exactly the results you describe.
