i have a 1979 John Deere 410 backhoe tractor that has a bad oil leak in the extendaboom on the backhoe part of my tractor. For right now i would just like to take the hole backhoe assembly off so i can use the tractor with the front bucket.I can't seem to find a manual that tells me how to take off the backhoe does anyone out there know a video or can tell me how to get the backhoe off my tractor. " HELP "

Well, Its not easy and you need lots of blocking and a way to secure the hoe. Why don't you just get some caps and plugs for the hoses? IF your not planning on using the hoe anyways, what does it matter? You can then chain the e-hoe in the closed position and be done with it until you can pull the cylinder. I really wouldn't suggest using the machine without the hoe unless your going to replace the missing weight. The rear end would likely be so light you would basically lose the functionality of your loader. Just my .02

RNR, I thought that was a good answer you gave for a temporary solution to the leaking backhoe cylinder without removing the whole hoe. I'm no expert, but could he, as an alternative to detaching the hoses, put a quarter-turn shutoff in each line? Then he might be able to use the backhoe temporarily, or in an emergency?
You're rignt about the tractor not being much use without weight on the rear.

A few thoughts, some have already been mentioned...

Not trying to be mean but if you have to ask how to remove the boom you probably do not have the ability to do so anyway.

Removing a boom on a machine this size is a job, it would be easier to just fix the leak.

If fixing the leak is not an option simply chain up the extend a hoe, lock the boom in its transport position and just don't use it.

Well, I wasn't giving much thought to emergency use of the hoe but thats also a good point. I don't trust quarter turn valves to much, they always seem to get bumped open or bumped closed somehow. Out of curosity, why don't you just remove the cylinder and get it repacked? Shouldn't be to expensive at a hydraulic shop. Maybe $250?
