What effect will a broken exhaust have on my engine? (diesel). Will be working to remove the rusted nuts/bolts this weekend to fix or replace...looks like just the manifold to the muffler needs a new pipe..which my friend will weld on (apparently not a job for the monster arc welder lol). It does seem like the machine is down a bit on power...but i'm not the expert.

Thanks to all.

Physically it wont damage anything. But it will be loud as ****. That looks like a fairly easy repair. B.

On our Perkins in stallions we had only to test for maximum back pressure, no limit on minimum.you should have no problem running until you get it fixed. It should have no effect on power. Not sure how your engine is located in relation to the op station but fumes to the operator could be your main problem.

Thanks for the feedback.... the fumes aren't doing too much as everyhthing is under the hood on this motor...and it is typically very windy out. (engine behind me on my machine..it's a big ol forklift).

I will get some 'blaster' on those bolts to start the process of loosening them this weekend and see what's what. We have another foot of snow to look forward too when i get up north this weekend,

Take care,
Hayes

the johnson bar and some penetrant got everything loose for me., looking for a replacement muffler the 'dealer' wants 550 dollars for the factory muffler. (things line up with an exhaust pipe in the rear cover of the machine). my bud asked if they have aftermarket and they laughed... he found me one for 150. I guess these places need to make some money...but 550 vs 150 is pretty steep.

should be a loud plowing weekend if we don't get the new one before then.

Nice work on your repairs! And yes running it like that is OK, I would worry about if you exhaust manifold gasket let go, that's bad news to run in the cold very hard on engines.
Look, I have done my own exhaust repairs on all my person vehicles. Even used flex pipe in the place of a resonator on a 98 mercury tracer. Worked very well for a Car I was only making it through college with and then 1 more year after that. Home done exhaust repairs save ALOT of money.

The battery cables of my f150 corroded out. Went to buy premade, well 78$ for positive and 85$ for neg..... ah wait what? This was the only premade they had. Well, I converted my pickup to marine post because 2 years of working in a truck shop taught me how to make my own battery cables. I had 4 gauge welding cable, battery lug ends and the tool to properly crimp them on! Easy with so much practice on trucks. Installed heat shrink tightly over the lugs and DONE! Costed me no money what so ever! Already had the parts. The 4 gauge welding cable was found in a trash can. I found maybe 12 feet of it with lugs that were corroded out. Cut off ends and it was new cable underneath.

Making your own repairs instead of buying premade things can save a good amount of money. Its what work taught me. You can get by just fine with out it. None the less a similar muffler for 150$ is perfectly fine as long as it is similar quality.

Thanks for the feedback... funny how for me it was huge to take the exhaust off.. two weeks sitting with penetrant may have helped.. My friend is an apprentice diesel mechanic (at 41!).. and his knowledge really helps. ITs his old machine from when he was a mason actually. So, his parts guy is helping him with the exhaust substitution. This is a 1980's perkins diesel... seems to run no matter what so far. (we've done the requisite fuel air and oil filter changes etc).

The next fun repair will be the injection pump. Think its CAV ... anyway, the cover on the pump is worn from the use and leaks ...like 50%. Could be expensive, but we'll go to the local guy and get the cover assembly rebuilt...not the whole pump. I enjoy learning about this, but often a roadblock for me means i'm down.

for battery cables we did our own too... he brought some cable, massive terminals and the crimper (the terminals use heated solder pellets to make connection... the crimper is worth a tonne of money though...something i'd not have access to otherwise).... saves money, and much better cables for the application.

Take care,
Hayes

Hi Diesel Lover,
Not sure on the model of Perkins, but will check it out. (pretty sure it is a big bigger, but will verify.) A search on the net will yield: https://www.google.ca/search?site=&...12.0....0...1c.1.32.hp..2.10.1110.ckrlC4BhsGs

lots of stuff on the CAV leaking injector pump. Basically the part can be fixed, but take care to tie down all springs etc so that nothing gets lost during the process...do it right (apprently) and you can bolt it back on a happy guy.

I'll post more on that, but not doing it until this summer... This is my plow vehicle..without it..i am in trouble as plow guys in my area are not reliable.

cheers,
hayes

Wow !!! I had no idea that could just be a banjo fitting leak!! I'm a truck mechanic at a fleet and we have those keak from oil pumps and fuel assemblys etc. They are not hard to fix.
Saying that it is also true that its good you didn't try to fix it at all. It might get worse and become hard to fix. People charge a lot to move a LITTLE snow now days. Pretty sad. As long as it is not a fuel leak that is getting into the crankcase I would not worry about it till summer. I have some mechanic friends that have offered to fix my injection pump leak as well. They said "if the performance of the engine is good you dont have to adjust the injector pump. You can leave everything as is and just reseal what ever it is. It may be a weap hole like on a water pump, a seal between the engine block or gear box, or something else but its very fixable". They offered to help which I will gladly accept. Just as well, let me know how yours goes. Mine is in Michigan right now at my dads house. I'm in the process of buying a house and then I will bring the tractor down here to take care if the property and snow
