The morning news here said this cold snap should kill 3/4 of the invasive Emerald Ash Borer larvae. Hope it gets some mosquitoes & biting flies too!

NC DOT will use either brine or sand/salt on the road depending on conditions. The brine dries quickly leaving the salt behind. Brining will work if it is not rained off or if the temperatures do not get too cold. Sand/salt is used when it gets cold and we get a fair amount of snow or ice. Since most of NC does not get snow very often there are not many plow trucks but DOT will put their trucks in service with snow blades to clear roads. The problem is that if the snow happens in the day or before the plows can clear the snow, the snow is compacted to ice and the plows are useless. At that point only salt/sand helps until we get warm temperatures to melt the ice. Thankfully, this does not happen often.
A few years ago we had a perfect storm. It started snowing about 1-2pm. VERY heavy and schools started closing early. DOT was not able to get out in traffic to clear the snow and people started to drive home and/or pick up kids so the snow turned to ice. The snow did not last long and was only an inch or two but the traffic compacted the snow into a sheet of ice. Thousands of people were stranded in cars over night. Some school buses were stranded and some kids had to spend the night in school. The roads were blocked from traffic that could not move and the buses could not travel on the ice anyway. It was a real mess.
I was lucky in that we were living in the country and I was driving against traffic. An F450/550 almost slid into me on the ice but I made it home pretty easily. The funny thing was that the snow fell on only a few counties and as I drove home the snow/ice was diminished. We had very little snow on the grass in my county and nothing on the roads. Its was chaos in Raleigh, Durham, Cary, etc but we were just fine. :dance1: Some times you get the good dice roll! :laughing::laughing::laughing:

yeah, well - i never went for the one-season-folks that forget about drought, hurricanes, floods, & other such pestulance as is common in non-northern parts of the globe.

Compared to some of ya'll, It's a heat wave here 33* now. Wind gust about 25 MPH..... They expect 10*-15* by Friday morning. Still warm compared to some of ya'll's temps
