Yesterday, 2 hour school delay because a chance of "dusting of snow".

Last night on the news, they had about 7 pictures of back decks with a dusting of snow, if that, barely white.

Last week, school cancelled because it was too cold.

You know when you turn on the news at 10 at night and they lead with the chance of 1" of snow for the first 10 minutes there isn't much news.

All that said, I'm never moving back north:laughing:

25 years ago we moved to South Carolina from PA. We used to laugh in disbelief when school was cancelled because of snow " flurries ", anyway it quickly became home, and we started raiding the grocery store at the hint of snow.

We got 4" last night, and you would've thought it was the end of the world. Funny thing is, they don't have resources to plow anything but state highways, so road conditions on everything else are terrible -- worse than I ever saw when growing up in New England when we would get feet of snow (up there they plow within a few hours of the storm ending, and roads clear up fairly quick). Maybe that's why people freak out so bad. I bet if they plowed like they should, and let the roads clear like they could, it would be much less of a crisis. I am betting the side roads won't clear up until the weekend when it finally warms above freezing.

I lived in Vermont for 10 years and I only saw conditions that were horrible to drive in 3 or 4 times. I got run off the road by an oncoming car that didn't know it had drifted into my lane once. Blizzard in Eden VT. I saw 5 SUVs stuck in the median divider along about 1 mile of highway that had black ice once. Funny part was that they were all the SUVs with 4WD. Guess it makes you a bit cocky :) And I've seen some of the dirt roads become impossible during Vermonts short 5th season, known as mud season.

But honestly, NC isn't unreasonable about the snow delays. They don't salt the roads here. They don't have the resources to do a good job sanding and plowing, and because we are generally above freezing, we tend to get patches of ice when there is precipitation and then a temp drop. In Vt we got snow.

Ice+no equipment to get rid of it+southern drivers is worse than VT. It's a potential catastrophe. I've now lived here the same number of years as I lived in VT, and I've seen 2 ice storms that created driving conditions that were as bad as that black ice stretch in VT, but here, it was every road. The school closings, while funny, make sense. Put an inexperienced driver on a slightly icy road near a bus stop, and it could be really ugly. Besides, half the kids don't own gloves or real winter clothing. We don't want kindergarten kids in sweatshirts waiting outside on a windy 28 degree morning for a bus that is 15 minutes late because of slightly bad conditions and southern drivers...

For the most part, I agree with you.

Wife is from Vermont, I was born in Maine, and as a adult working, I lived through the 90" or so dumping in upstate New York back in the late 90's.

For some reason though, out of the 13 years or so living here, this year seems the worse as far as cancelling school just due to cold weather or the chance of flurries. The news taking up the first 10 minutes of a dusting of snow along with those deck pictures was the breaking point:D

Its getting to be that way up here more so over the year..those that like to push panic button.

I remember waiting for bus -15F or better, snowing hard you wait under hemlock tree, and bus driver had to learn put tire chains on.
Some folks just because they have 4wd than can go anywhere and some do,that much further off the road..
