Anti static strap

D7E beat me to it. We had a log chain drag from the rear of the combine, boss always said it helped keep the dust off of the windows and with fires.

When working on electronic equipment it is not essential to have a static strap AS LONG as you maintain contact with the earthed frame.

I repair computers without a strap by constantly maintaining contact with the chassis. This saves me having a strap in my pocket all the time.

A huge static charge can build up on plastic gas cans. A study was done several years ago where they measured the charge generated by the movement of the gas against the jug while filling and found 10's of thousands of volts. They stored the jugs inside with gas still in them for about 2 weeks and found the charge had not diminished. They found the best way to discharge the voltage was to wipe down the jug with a wet cotton cloth.

I became a real believer when I filled jugs for my plane and as I carried jugs back to my pickup I could feel the hair on my legs stand out.

That is another reason when plastic bedliners were installed in many trucks they told people to remove the plastic gas can from the bed and fill it on the ground. This is not a problem, to my knowledge with spray on liners line Linex and similar.

And Arron Z, I concede that I was incorrect about static and cell phones; and I quoted the article about static electricity later in the thread to confirm that static is indeed a real world problem....
