am debating the purchase of a box or just scraper blade. i have a front plow and am looking to use this for counterweight/ getting snow close to buildins or cars in the drives i do. i feel the box blade may have a few more uses for only a couple hundred more. i have tried saving $ on several other purchases and eventually end up getting what i wanted in the first place. any thoughts? another snowstorm is supposed to be here tomorrow night!

If you can swing it, get both. They each have their intended purpose and they are not the same, not at all. ;)

a box blade does not work very well for snow removal. the sides of the box scrap the drive

Spend your money on a heavy duty blade. You can find used blades on CL from time to time for cheap.

I have both. You are right that the box blade has many uses, but snow removal is not one of them. For snow removal, you should get a scraper blade that can be angled 20-30 degrees.

I use a homemade box blade with a 24" high box. Works great for me.

A back blade won't make much counter weight, but it's good for moving small amounts of snow much quicker than then FEL.

I have had both in different sizes. For snow removal wider is better within reason. I'd sum it up like this. A box blade is better for cleaning areas that are tighter and lots of hard to get to areas. In your driveway. Blades are better for long driveways. I used to use a back blade for my drive. Three maybe four passes and i was done. Then I got a blower. I never used my blade anymore so I sold my last one. Now I went front mount, I use my box blade for counter weight and those hard to get areas.

A box blade a long drive is pretty frustrating as it loads up I. Forward and makes a mess in reverse. This my experience YMMV.
If you can buy used and buy both try it out for yourself than resell the one you like less. Good luck and have fun.
