All I have ever used is Highway diesel in tractors for over 20 years. It is just more trouble than it is worth to get the red off road fuel here for the small amount I use.

I use 'on the road' diesel most of the time. IF I get caught between a rock and a hard place (read broke) then I will use furnace oil which my supplier says is just diesel with the red dye in it.

It's perfectly okay, it is the same product except for the dye. Not much off-road fuel around here either. Everything, trucks, tractors, excavation equipment, gets fueled from the same #2 diesel pumps at the station.
Off-road fuel is more commonly available in farming areas.

All I use is on road highway diesel. I get mine at the local truck stop which goes through a lot. Not many places around my area have non highway use fuel either. Those that do like to sell in bulk as a farm would need and not to guys like me who buy 10-20 gallons at a time. Regular #2 or even #1 diesel is fine in this cold weather.

sure is. I alternate between highway and non highway fuels depending on what station im using. all are rated the same and only the red dye is added.
That, and all the highway fed and state taxes.
I can get red branded fuel for about $0.40 cheaper per gallon here.

ya, but just try going down that road. talk about setting off the alarm bells of the govt. you need exact records showing miles/hours used, all sorts of records.
Even my accountant advised against doing it.
