Propane Cost???

WOW! I am really shocked at what people are paying for power. I have always been shocked at what people pay for propane to heat their homes but the power costs people are reporting are unreal to me.

We heat with wood and if the temps are normal, the living room will be 80-82 with the rooms farthest from the stove being 5-10 degrees colder. During the really cold spells we had over the last couple of months the living room was at 75-78. The single wood stove is for a 1800-2000 sf house and we have 2425 with 10 foot ceilings so the wood stove and house is doing pretty good keeping the house warm. In really cold weather, we need two stoves but since the really cold cold does not USUALLY last long, it does not make sense to put in a second stove. Our power bill was $120-140 last month which I think is mostly from washing/drying clothes as well as running a heater 24 hours a day for the chickens.

got my letter on Tuesday
didn't say how much it's going to cost but said 100 gal max
good thing I quit using LP for heat 3 years ago and only use it for my water heater and stove (and the wife doesn't cook much)
my pellet stove has been putting out the heat we need for the whole house
went to buy more pellets last Thursday and would only sell me 20 bags

Guy at work got 200 gal for $3.99
that was for the month of January
man now that sucks

We are the same way, Dan. No way would I want to depend on propane and we use the wood stove a good bit. I try to only fill the propane tank once yearly. This winter we have been going through the wood.

I enjoy cutting fire wood. Kinda like a working picnic with the dog, getting out cutting wood, eating lunch, and working the saws.

Looking at the first photo....

:laughing::laughing: How MANY Stihls does one man need?:laughing::laughing:

I have heard coworkers talk about there heating costs for years and it has always shocked how much the spend per month. They would tell me how much money it cost to fill the tank and it would only last a month! I figured it would last a couple of months but they said no, just one month. I noticed a propane truck today and I was wondering how much "money" was on the truck.:laughing::laughing:

I really do feel sorry for people having to pay this much to stay warm. Unreal.

Cutting and splitting firewood is very rewarding. Gives me a good work out, cleans up the place, saves me money since I clean up the place, and keeps us warm. Seeing a stack of split wood saying you got something done! Course today, I was looking at the rounds I need to split to make a nice stack of firewood. :D I sure have some work to do but I hope to have it done before long and be ready for next season. :D

Love cutting wood, but had to give it up due to health. We have about a 150 acres or so of timber and fallen Oak, Hickory just lie there. I've offered several people access, but no takers. I keep a little on hand in case of an emergency.

Curious why no takers on the Hickory? Too hard or other characteristic?
I use it in my smoker/grill seems to do quite well for this use.

Beats me, I've cut and split and burns great. The ice storm in 2009 took down some pecan trees and we finally found someone to take them. They only did so because they were in an open pasture just off the main road and we had to clean up after them.

A couple of years ago a couple of guys agreed to take an Oak tree that had fallen on a field road. They cut a little while drinking some beers and left never to return, I eventually just pushed it out of the way were it still lies.

Guess there would be a lot of lawbreakers where I am since wood burning has been banned over 30 of the last 60 days...

Electricity goes to 34 cents a Kw quickly... not many with propane.

Expect Propane prices to plummet from the backlash that will follow... just my guess.

Most use natural gas

The people who are having their "emergency clause" invoked, are you on a pre-paid fixed price contract for some number of gallons?

I have used those in the past and saved money. But, a couple of heating oil dealers in Maine that offered those contracts, closed their doors and left people hanging with money paid and no oil delivery in mid-winter. Something to be aware of.

I would think that the delivery companies that have contracts at stated price would also be contracting with their supplier, or buying future delivery contracts at some price to cover themselves. I wonder how that works.

I live in central NC. About 2 miles from my house is the largest propane pipe line for the east coast. They just did a expansion last year and can now fill about 20, 18 wheel transports at a time. Drove buy there today, they had 20 trucks loading and another 50 waiting in line. Have not seen truck waiting in line sense they did expansion of fill station.
I can judge propane prices by how many truck are in line, I would say watch out. Prices are only going up.
