First there has to be a need. If he is fishing, hunting, backpacking, wilderness canoeing, I see a need. The activity comes first. He learns to clean fish first with you and your knife. Later he gets his first knife to clean his fish. When you get home knife is stored. HS

Wagtail, you should be proud. Very cool.

Thanks for all of your input guys. It is really neat to hear your own stories, history, and ideas.

Hey Houston... agree that activity/need is paramount otherwise the 'young gun' might just play. but I don't agree with the storage part. I carried a pocketknife all the time (cub and boy scout I confess) even in school. Back then it wasn't an issue because it was used as a tool. Unfortunately now there is such a stigma with knives and guns that good people with best of intentions are demonized. Even my son thinks these tools are bad for society. This really disheartens me. What I see is the steady erosion of self reliance and independence of the next generation. Okay I will get off my soapbox but com'n people... stop looking for someone else (government) to tell you what/where/how you will behave and just be a good husband, father, neighbor, teacher of those you bring into this world.
