Ive spent a couple hrs trying to look this up on the web and couldnt find a good answer.

I'm thinking about rewiring my property to eliminate one of the two meters while at the same time wiring up a recently drilled deep well.

Here is the setup. 3 buildings in roughly a straight row about 300' from each other.
Small Barn <- ~300' <- equipment barn & well -> ~300' -> house

Was thinking about having a meter put in the middle by the equipment barn then running 2 independent runs around 300' each underground to each building.

Question, what size wire would be needed and at what distance/wire size does it become cost prohibitive to go up in wire size?

Tia!

You need to know your service sizes in amps, before you can make any calculations..

Depends:
Is this a single phase, 240V systems?
What amperage to each building? i.e. what is main breaker in each building?
Copper or aluminum wire?
Above ground aerial or underground, direct bury or in conduit?
Is the utility involved? Will they make you put a disconnect switch, or switches, at the meter?

Well without having info as to the amps, ill give the following observations that i use every day of my working career.....electrical contractor.

I have installed lots of 400 amp services, 240 volt single phase systems up here over the years. Usually we run one 200 amp feeder from meter to shop, and one 200 amp service to house. I almost always calculate this as needing 2-1/2" conduit runs and 250 MCM aluminum feeder wires to each building. This allows for minimal voltage drops around 3.6%

also, just to know the price to increase from 4/0 to 250 mcm isnt very much, but does require a larger conduit.
heres a site you can look at Voltage Drop Calculator

Thanks! I will have to look when I'm out there next weekend.
It's an average size house, 1 AC/heat pump, hot water heater, electric stove/oven, electric washer/dryer, 3 bedroom with an extra 240v hookup for aux water pump.

The barn is less, refer, lights, plugs, aux water pump and RV plug.

Will be buried.

Depending on how reliable your power is, or if you ever thought a about a generator, but you may want to consider that now would be the best time to put in a transfer switch and genset connection point.

What is your base fee for the meters? You could spend thousands trying to save $100 a year in base meter fees.
