Pricing of fairly new(3-5years old) used tractors wont be far off of new price for that size tractor unless it has been abused or broken. I would suggest that for your budget and need of a 30-40 HP tractor, you consider new unless you can find a real bargain between now and the time needed to buy. There is always the great buy of a lifetime, which for me is always after I have already bought, but folks do occasionally find the anxious to sell and hard up seller willing to sacrifice his sale just to get out of the debt. So in the meanwhile keep looking at Craigslist and other ads for a forced sale, but beware of scams where they will list for cheap, cheap but always ask for some money up front. Also beware of buying from an individual for really cheap as it may also be stolen. If it is legitimate, they will usually have a bill of sale where they bought it AND give you a BOS. A local dealer could check the serial numbers for you against any reported stolen tractors along with the local law enforcement folks.
