It's partly a matter of education. If you grow up living with winter weather, your more likely to understand the specific cold weather issues and can make good decisions on the allocation of resources like time, money and physical effort. On the matter of preparedness, those are more generalized skills of understanding the systems you depend on and prioritizing and of us that had parents and neighbors that practiced good preparedness knowledge, will typically do better. For instance, we depend on electric power for heat, water, septic, cooking etc., and we typically loose power for a few days every other year with the longest being 2 weeks. Along with loosing power, we also get isolated because of flood and trees down in the roadways so that we can't leave to resupply essentials. Because of those situations, we have backups such as portable electric power and wood stove for heat and also our camping equipment comes into play. Those are substantial investment of knowledge, time physical ability and money that aren't available to some people. And then their are the gerbils.

Well said and I believe to be accurate. I am a transplanted northerner and a prepper by nature. I have considerable investments in preparedness gear and skills. Enough so that a lot of others would not have been able to allocated the financial resources to do so. Plus, in general, southerners do not see this kind of weather. I have been here for ~ 35 years and have never seen this kind of event. That said, there are still a lot of things people can do to help themselves- and in general do not.

My daughter in Augusta, Ga. said it looks like a bomb zone or tornadoes went through there, with large swaths of old, large trees down across power lines and poles- massive infrastructure damage, from her accounts. Last night she and her mother noticed how green and bright the sky was off in the distance. It was bright enough their street lights sensors thought it was daylight and turned off the street lights. My guess is this was caused by transformers going or more likely a power substation.

As time has gone on, most of the voters have obviously become dependent upon the government with the false expectation they will be taken care of with more than just monthly stipends of various types. And that there is not a need to take responsibility for ones self. This country went past that tipping point in 2008 and have continued that direction to this day. 2016 will most likely cement that path. And they do not learn either, as New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin was re-elected for another term even after his extremely poor performance during hurricane Katrina. And with all of the damage to the Northeast with hurricane Sandy, odds are individual preparedness will not change as we continue down the path of greater government dominance. Gerbils- great term.

I've been very happy with the Sony. I'm sure that the newer models are even nicer so read up!

I love the size, it's hardly bigger than a pack of cigarettes and since I shoot on the farm and at horse shows, it's got to be sealed.

If it's not dusty in my world it's because it's raining!
