A friend was having trouble with his White 1265. I thought it was a frozen sump. Anyway, in the end it truns out the drive on the pump sheared off, and it was a year old pump.

I know with a positive displacement pump, you can blow the pump apart if the relief isn't working. It happened to the same guy with a Bolens/Iseki tractor.

But what happens when a positive displacement (Gear) pump can't get oil on account of a blockage?

Could this have caused the mechanical drive failure?

Thanks

It could get hot enough internally (no lubrication) to seize and break the shaft, not necessarily what happened but possible.

Apparently, the pump is OK, just the mechanical drive connection broke.

It must be a hi pressure fault then. Loss of feed oil will not break a shaft w/o some other damage occurring 1st.

Sounds to me like he is running the wrong fluid. If to thick of fluid is run in very cold weather it can and does cause pump problems.

Which pump failed ? Steering / hitch or loader?

That tractor has a fiat engine, pumps have always been problematic.

NOT the steering pump. Apparently a year ago someone put in a larger pump saying he needed that as he as a FEL.

He was using the loader a lot one day, put it away, and the next day said he lifted the 3ph and then it was all she wrote. Reading other posts, and with the extreme cold at the time, I was certain that it was an ice issue in the sump.

Any chance we could see photos of the broken shaft, often the failure can be determined by the grain pattern of the break.

It has been repaired. I can ask more questions. The guy wil be here tomorrow. I ust kind of was wondering if a frozen sump could cause such failure.

If a chunk of ice could get sucked into the pump it could stop it.
