On just about every pump install, they tell you to flood the pump and rotate it slowly until all the air is bled out. Therefore, the purpose of the air bleed tube.

Though this is preferred in all pump install/reinstall.....it's mostly important on piston pumps to fill the case drain port on the main housing during new or rebuild start-up......it is not necessary to perform this priming once the pump is already been in use in a piston pump

Does this unit use piston pumps for hydrostatic drive?

Yes, I believe the tram pump is a variable volume piston pump with a swash plate. The factory recommends bleeding the pump every time you change the hydraulic filter.

Okay, finally was able to get around to the PT again. I attached two pics. The first one shows the leak down the plate that runs under the gas tank, and is between the tram pump and engine (on the '99 MY PT422). I talked to the good folks at Tazewell and they suspect it is just the shaft seal. Once I have a little time I will pull the pump and replace.

The good news is the little Subaru is firing right up in the freezing cold. Let's hope that continues.

Also, the second pic shows a set of 48W LED 4.5" x 4.5" headlights I just installed. They are much much brighter than factory, and were around $90 bucks on Amazon. I highly recommend, was a quick and easy install.

Got my forks in the mail last night so I am all ready to do some lifting! Hopefully I am smoother on the controls than the first few times.

That's what happened to my pump. When the seal went the oil came out pretty fast, i thought a hose had given up. It was under warranty so they shipped a new pump and i shipped a broken one back. Those lights look pretty good but i don't think ill be switching mine out. I don't do much night work and besides, i've only had one light working since i received the PT but didn't notice for a few years. Thats how much night work i do.

I noticed you still have the little rubber **** on the tires. Are they new or just really long lasting. I still have some on my 2001, but not that many.

I will be interested in your results with the LED. I have the same, just got them on Ebay. The Intensity is pretty amazing. The downside, though, is that LED's have an issue with the small engines. Something about how they charge the battery sends pulses to the LED's and it fries the circuits. It happened on our Kohler and our law tractor. Took me a lot of reserach to find out the culprit. But these lights might have different circuitry that keeps them healthy. Our tractor we just replaced the regular 12 volts.

Probably not an issue on the Deutz's, but I don't know how the power is generated on the PT-4XXs. Some of the older tractors use a partially rectified DC that the battery should smooth out to a reasonable 13VDC. However, if you have battery or grounding issues, you can have some pretty ugly power that is both intermittent and a long way from 14VDC.

The last couple of these lights that I bought came with a fair amount of internal power regulation- they were willing to accept AC/DC 9-28V, but YMMV. I put a pair of them on my pickup and another pair on the trailer and now I can actually see what I am doing at night. It always seemed as if I was hooking up or backing up trailers in the dark.

Adding a capacitor across the lights wouldn't hurt, if you are worried about power spikes or think that your tractor has power issues.

All the best,

Peter

Mossroad, came with brand spanking new tires and paint.

So far so good. Used them for about 2 hours last night clearing snow in the dark. They light up everything and are far brighter than the headlights on my old Dodge pickup. No flickering or anything unusual yet, but I will keep an eye out and let you all know.
