take the starter apart and clean it.

if nothing else a fast flashing solvent that won't attack the insulation would be naptha... don't use acetone or laq thinner..

This is really ugly, but here it is with the two long bolts removed. I don't think an electrical device needs all black lubrication so I guess it's dirt and diesel. How do I clean from here? Take it apart more? Fill with Gunk cleaner? just rinse out with Brakleen? Take it to a rebuilder? buy a new one? Oh, and I aint really mechanically inclined.....

On picture one of the starter. Shouldn't there be a rubber grommet around that copper bar? One. it seals the starter from moisture, two it acts as an insulator for the 12vdc.

To buy new or used depending how deep your pockets are. Parts are still available for these. Looks can be deceiving as to it's true condition. Yellow Pages would be my start. Call around and find a shop in your area. Or.. Do some research, take a deep breath and do it yourself. If it's just diesel fuel gummed up in it it should clean out. It must be broken dow into components first. Goto www.agocpartsbook.com and get part numbers on a whole starter and parts. Start calling dealers closest to you. Some salvage yards might have a pile of these stacked up. As I said. Depends on your budget as to what direction to take. There are plenty of resources on the net including videos to aid you. Good luck.

OK, found a rebulider and got it done today: $100 and 1 yr warranty. New one from Wilson was $230. Now I just gotta get it back in and rewire the ignition key to the starter so I dont have to jump it each time with a screwdriver.

thanks for all replys!

Diesel starting circuits are different from the gas, so pay close attention to which diagram you follow rewiring it.
