Girdle the base of the tree with a chainsaw a few inches deep, it will die. If you're hunting there, I don't think you want to be introducing chemicals because eventually you'll probably be the one eating them.

With the lower branches on the ground, it is not easy to get to the trunk with a chainsaw.

If you aren't interested in chaining the land, and the trees are too big for a tree puller, you could try a tree shear. There are any number of ways to kill the trees, but you still have to get rid of them eventually, right?
