I've got to admit I'm a little jelous of all the snow everyone down south and out east are getting. We finally made the decision to step up from an old 8n for snow removal to a newer tractor this year and I've been itching to move some snow. Here in Iowa snow is normally a given throughout winter. This year it seems to be all going south of us. The cab tractor has been awsome during what little snow I have been able to move so far. I use a blade on the rear and the fel to move everything. I live on a flat acearage in the middle of wide open farm feilds. Nearly all the snow we have gotten this year blows away. The attached image is what happens when you put up a snow fence in flat windy area. IMG_20140207_185411_412.jpgIMG_20140207_185659_902.jpg

Just put a cab on my Max 28 from Cover My Tractor. It took a bit to get it on by myself but I eventually got everything to fit and zippered together. Next on the list is the front snowblower.

I have family @ Overland Park, their reports corroborate your findings....:D

It has been a weird winter here in NW Oregon too, including the odd duck migration; too few came South. We did have 5 days of sub-freezing @ 2 feet of powder. Supposed to snow again this week above 1K feet.

Indications are the jet stream is flattening-out as we are currently being hit with the "Pineapple Express"; 5" of rain expected by this Tuesday, and the cascades are catching-up on the snow-pack, which means plenty of irrigation-water (and for the fish species) for Central Oregon. Much of the ocean's influence has dived South for us too.

In the short time I have had my 3016 out in the snow, I am already convinced I need snow chains and a rear blade.

This is probably a dumb idea, but ...

My driveway is gravel. So I had a dumb thought. Has anyone used a FEL and a box scraper to do the plowing? Would it be effective? Is it truly as stupid as I it sounds?

I look at it that it would break up any ice/snow pack left behind the FEL . The gravel would be mixed in for better melting. (Gray/black in the remaining snow.)

Or would you suggest that I go to a southern location and give up my tractor? :banghead:

I use my FEL and a straight up rear blade. I have a box blade but it's a little narrow for the job. I would have to say that the box blade will pile over faster than you think, even with the FEL leading the way. Might not be optimal, but neither is a rear blade.... only thing that matters is you get it done.

My driveway is gravel and I plow with the bucket all the time. I just put it in float mode and tip up the bucket a little so it doesn't dig in and plow. Then lift and dump into piles.

My driveway looks like a slight hump and lump as opposed to a flat uphill. So float alternatively digs in or leaves a lot of crap behind. :smiley_aafz: And then what has been left behind this year, with a little sun added, becomes a snow/ice compact worthy of the luge at the Olympics.

But since the FEL is only a 50" I have to make two passes regardless.

The reason that I'm thinking a box scraper is I can essentially use it year round for somewhere less than $500. If I decide to put in a small garden the box scraper isn't the best, but it would be an option. Where the blade is about a 3 month use and then just sits somewhere the rest of the time. And if this is the "bad" winter for the next five years would it be worth the cost?

Or is my logic totally messed up? :duh:

No, one must prioritize (private sectors only). I thought building an arsenal of implements was part of the "game"; get one of everything!

Humps in driveways and trails can be relocated to create a flatter surface.

My 60" box-scraper is invaluable; I use it for an additional 500#s of ballast, for picking-up and dropping-off dirt and gravel into voids, I use it for ripping-out small stumps (teeth reversed) and I used it for moving large piles of brush towards slash-piles before I got my Q/A forks.

Nice lights (from Dave), a 72" 3 point blade, and snow-chains are on my short-list; I want the blade to move snow, cut rain-gutters on the uphill sides of my skidding trails, and perhaps for grooming both sides of the trails.

My ultimate attachment(s) is a farmi-type winch and perhaps a log-grrrrrrrrapple!

If I can make a recommendation or suggestion here Trask: I'd be looking for a blade with the tallest moldboard I could find. Mine is only 14" tall and snow constantly barrels over it. Look for one with at least a 17"-18" height. I know Landpride makes a 6 footer with that height. King Cutter also makes one. They are more pricey ( most near or over 1K range) as the taller moldboards seem to come only on the heavier duty units. One of the benefits is the added ballast as a heavy duty 6' rear scraper blade will come in well over 400 lbs.
