Shucks. Although I guess the word "farm" might need to be diagnosed as well, as it may be up to interpretation for different folks.
We just raise hogs, a couple hundred meat birds, egg birds, pumpkins, and other misc vegi's on just 10-15 acres. A whole different operation from my grandpas 160 acres of corn/soy.

Yeah, they can be a necessary evil. I certainly understand that. Only thing I don't like is when guys with nice salary jobs scoff at paying $4 for a dozen organic eggs, or $18/quart for maple syrup. Yeah, it's not cheap, but that's what it costs. If you don't like it, shop at wal-mart. We deserve to be paid for our work too. Other thing is when people with off the farm jobs undersell everyone at the farmer's market. They grow some tomatoes in the garden and sell them for less than they cost to produce, because they don't account for all their inputs, or just don't care if they make or lose money. It's a hobby for them. It's the same as being undercut in bushhogging by the guy down the road who doesn't have insurance and is just out there for fun. I'm not saying they shouldn't do it, it can just make it tough for those of us "farming" professionally.

We "farm" about 1.25 acres. Could do more, but it's a lot of work already. We cultivate almost entirely by hand. Still farming, though.

Not even sure what this means. I do think I know what he meant by "compression". The two I was comparing matched up really well, if that is what he meant. Either way, this thread has gone the way most do; they soon get off topic, most everyone's true colors come out and they support their favorite, regardless of facts, and in the end, only a few replies are valuable. I do sincerely appreciate the ones that actually attempted to help this beginner with a little knowledge. To the rest, I apologize for starting this; I just wanted a little help. It won't happen again.

That three ranges on the Kubota is a huge selling point. Also I know from looking at the John Deere E tractors that the way they have dropped their price is by trimming metal, switching to plastic where possible including the hoods which to me is a huge no-no, and using cheaper Chinese parts. You even said the Kubota is 450 lbs heavier. Where do you think JD took away that 450 lbs from???
It comes down to you get what you pay for. I am surprised that the Kubota is that much more, but just the 450 lbs of extra metal is worth $1000 on the open market. I would buy the Kubota.

Once again, what is a huge selling point for one person doesn't mean anything to someone else. For example the 3 range hydrostat. I truly don't see the need. Don't see the need for the extra weight either and I truly prefer the plastic parts to the metal. So in the end, it's all personal preference.

Perhaps he meant to say "in a comparison"? The most fun and excitement happens when the thread gets "sidewinded". I think its the same feeling when the girls go shopping because they need a new blouse and come home with shoes, a dress or two, a new vacuum and a christmas tree because "everything was on sale".
