You guys all have good stories, but I bet nobody has ever been passed by his own trailer! :)
It happened to my dad and I was still a kid sitting in the passengers seat. He started using the trailer chains after that incident.

Very Lucky no one was injured.
My Brother destroyed a tailgate on my parents s10 and lost a jeep 4 liter engine out the back in the same move because he failed to strap the pallet down with the engine on it.

Thats definitely worse than the time my dad and i went to sears to get new tires for the van and someone pulled the old lunch wheel trick (Forgot to install lug nuts before going on break) and the rear wheel fell off and passed us as we attempted the turn out of parking lot. My dads face turned a shade of purple i'd never seen before and then he started spewing profanity's

I had my tractor, bush hog, and disc loaded up on my trailer. Everything was strapped and/or chained down. Safety chains on the trailer connecting it to the truck. Trailer on the ball. Everything was good until I got to the job site. Hit a bump and the trailer jumped off the hitch. Luckily, everything was secured and the safety chains worked. No harm, no foul.

That is when I remembered the trailer takes a 2 5/16" ball, not a 2" ball. Could have been a lot worse. Doesn't take much for everything to go bad fast.

I have to use all 3 sizes of ball hitches. So Each is permanently marked on top of the receiver hitch and what I did was number them with a 1/2 inch steel stamp.. when I hook up, I check to make sure the numbers match, on the hitch mount and the trailer hitch. 1 for 1-7/8 , 2 for 2 inch and 3 for 2-5/16. Stamped just aft of receiver on hitch and on top of the ball socket on the trailer.

I did this because my son borrowed the truck and changed the balls and I did not notice and my trailer I was towing came off the ball as it was too small. Luckily, I had the safety chains on. All I had to change was the A frame jack....

I noticed someone mentioned paint. Good Idea also.

Be safe all
Tom

A few years ago, my wife and I bought a very expensive made-in-Canada new queen sized mattress to replace a futon. It came in a cardboard box, and it was all the warehouse guy and I could do to lift it into the back of my pickup. Too wide to fit between the wheel arches, so I wedged the back down, closed the tailgate on top of it, and the front part was just below the cab window. I was about to strap it when the guys watching laughed and said something to the effect "it ain't goin anywheres" and it was a cold day, so we headed home without bothering to rig a strap- up the expressway leading out of downtown Baltimore. Luckily, it was a Sunday, very little traffic. I went slowly- 50-55 and everything seemed fine. I got careless, speeded up without intending to, only to notice the light reflecting in my rear-view mirror suddenly changing. As I watched, the box lifted up, front first, sailed over the tailgate, and glided (quickly- it was heavy) onto the highway behind us. Luckily, nobody was behind me, and the car that was back there had plenty of time to stop. By the time I backed up, I had learned a lesson I will never forget. If one strap is good, three are better! The box didn't even have a scratch on it! The fact I could have easily killed a family really registered.

Reminds me of a time I had a couch on top of a mattress in the back of my pickup. I had it strapped down with 2 straps but what I did not count on was the bouncing effect popping the straps off of the arms of the couch. Once the straps came off the arms they were loose at 60 mph in 4 lanes of heavy traffic I had been watching as I always do and quickly took the next exit. I think I had 5 straps on it before I got back on the freeway.

Few years ago a guy lost a ladder off his truck rack while on a bridge over I12.Lady on I12 was killed after hitting the extension ladder & he is now in prison. I tell this story frequently to new help that give me that look because I'm being **** about tying down my siding rig.
