I hope like **** we don't have another cold winter like this again anytime soon. I'm all for Global warming.

Sounds like we'll be seeing it first hand this Summer. Predictions for us are hot and dry.

Hope it's not too dry. We just bought this place last September. Pond was bone dry when we moved in, just a small pond at the back of our 10 acres. This last snow melt and the hail we had last week filled it right up. I went down with the tractor last Sunday to start cleaning it out and to my surprise it was completely full. I couldn't believe it. The dogs loved it.

Last three fills here in CT were: $1.95 (Oct '13), $2.24 (Dec '13), and $2.95 (Jan '13). Need to place an order soon and hoping we've seen the top. My prices are for an owned tank, not rented, which adds about $1.60 per gallon. Plus, with an owned tank, I can shop around for best price. This has been a memorable winter, and not in a good way. :(

This is how crazy pricing is around here. Called one supplier who's had the best price this winter. First quote was $5.28/gal. I reminded them I own my tank so she ran some numbers and said, best they could do was $4.00/gal, so I placed an order knowing I'd call another supplier. Second supplier who has been way high all winter quotes me $2.84/gal. Guess who's got my next propane delivery. Pays to shop around. I think these suppliers have hedged the price in some way and depending on how they played the futures market they are either competitive or wacked out on price.

MFA out of Seymour MO says 2.59\2.49 a gallon depending upon which side of 200 gallons you want. Was 1.69 in September. Sigh. But its time...

Leased tank.

I get gouged all the time since I don't own the tank. If I bought my own tank...what are the particulars about having it "certified" and how often must it be done? I am wondering if you buy your own 300 gallon tank, how many fill-ups would it take to pay for the tank? I know prices go up and down. Mostly up...

Hear that sucking sound? It's the sound of millions of dollars being transferred from our pockets to the pockets of the commodity traders, hedge fund managers, and other assorted white collar Wall Street crooks.

I am curios about this too. I will be building in the spring and my only option gas wise is propane. I am thinking of maybe going all electric with a wood stove/fireplace.

If you are going to be building a new house, then the number one priority is to make sure it is highly energy efficient. It is many, many times easier to build energy efficiency into a new house that trying to do that with a leaky, poorly insulated old one.

As to energy sources I think the way to go is multi-fuels for a new, rural house--as relative fuel prices may change substantially over the years. You need to look at comparative fuel price calculators to find your best options--as there are substantial regional differences. As to electricity some utilities have very substantial winter rate discounts, others don't.

Just ordered propane this morning. They are back down to $2.19/gl. Sure am glad I didn't have to fill up earlier in Jan when they were at a high of $3.79/gl.
