XP is coming to an end on 4-8...What to do?

Did not think I'd like 8.1 but after my computer went belly up I had no choice but to change. It took me less than a week to go from the old vista machine to a new Core i7-4770 (4 cores running up to 3.9 GHz) with 8.1. My :2cents: just get 8.1 with a fast processor and don't look back. This week I dug out of the closet my first computer I built myself to get a couple thousand photos off it to store on my new one. With Windows XP and a 2.2 GHz AMD XP3200+ it took 30 minutes to write 7 GB at a time to a usb thumb drive. After transferring about 20 GB to the new machine, I transferred the first 7 GB back to the usb drive. Took the new computer 5 minutes to do it.

...start your moderate change to apple as soon as you can...

Oh my! I'm sorry - but I really have to wonder why anyone would move to apple.

Do yourself a favor - IF you choose to leave WinDoze behind, move to a LINUX platform. Apple? Oh my ....

Well if you are a geek, then Linux is good. OTOH, Macintosh is a lot less hassle.

I have my complaints about Apple, but I've been using the Mac for 6-8 years. It's great not to have to deal with antivirus software and it's constant updates, etc. After being a microslop user for eons (I have a DOS 1.1 beta disk here somewhere), Mac is the way to go for just **using** a computer instead of a job of engineering and maintaining it.

PLEASE KEEP THE APPLE vs MCRSFT stuff out of this........PLEASE........

I really do not want to upgrade the hardware we have because it WORKS

ANY significant upgrade will kill off the performance. Everytime they write new code, it gets bigger and bigger, requiring more and more processor horsepower and memory.

Do not expect to upgrade an operating system and have comparable performance to what you had before. It never happens.

Microslop never writes efficient code. Never.

Some light versions of Linux perform well on older machines. But do not expect to run a new Windows O/S on old hardware and have decent performance. Maybe it will be okay IF you can increase the RAM. That will help. You will also need available disk space.

THIS IS REALLY REALLY good stuff for me..........THANKS.........So, what is the worst thing that is gonna happen????????..............I guess I hate to spend a bunch of money on NEW units and just toss the 4 that I have that work...........So.......live with XP and just see what happens and when I have some money buy a new unit for my wife and another with me that has the newer op system??????????? We retired and sold our video business so we don't have the need for a mammoth set of units anymore.........I guess sit back and see what happens.........

Thanks for the thoughts guys.........God bless.....Dennis

IMO, the biggest reason to upgrade is when you need software that is not available on your old operating system. Otherwise, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Unless, of course, you like challenges....

Dennis just down load windows 7 upgrade advisor and see if your computer can run 7. If you like xp just keep running it, Dont fret it will still keep running the day after MS stops supporting it.

I installed Win7 to replace XP. Couldn't be happier and the cost was minimal $100 Canadian for Win7 Home Premium and it works with all the other programs on the computer.

install linux mint. I did on two xp machines this month.

Yeah, I used the MS utility to check my XP laptop for 8.1 upgrading, and it is not supported, even though it is a P4 HT machine with 4 gigs of ram. I'll just install Ubuntu. I use LibreOffice anyway, so don't care about MS Office, and I haven't used IE for years.
